Inspired by the conception of Mothers Day, Sonora Smart Dodd wanted a day to honor men like her father, a Civil War veteran who raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth. The first local Fathers Day was held in 1910, but it didnt become a national holiday until 1972.
