Today's top story
NETS FIRE HEAD COACH JACQUE VAUGHN
After a 8-23 stretch over their last 31 games, the Brooklyn Nets are making a change at head coach. On Monday, the Nets announced that the team has fired head coach Jacque Vaughn following a lackluster month. Vaughn began serving as the interim head coach following the firing of head coach Kenny Atkinson in 2020 and did so again when head coach Steve Nash was fired in November 2022. Vaughn, who had served as an assistant coach on Nash's staff, was installed as the permanent head coach just one week after becoming the interim head coach when Nash was fired. The Nets have not yet named a replacement.
Here's more from CBS Sports NBA writer Sam Quinn on Vaughn's tenure in Brooklyn:
Quinn:"That interim tag was removed following a hot start, but things fell apart in the middle of last season when extension talks with Kyrie Irving broke down and he sought a trade. The Nets sent him to Dallas and followed that move up by dealing Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns. With a suddenly rebuilding roster, the Nets declined. They fell to the No. 6 seed in last year's postseason, and now, at 21-33, they sit in 11th place in the Eastern Conference. They have gone 8-23 since their impressive 13-10 start."
The Hot Ticket
Iowa State at Houston, 9 p.m. | TV: ESPN
The Pick: Under 131.5 (-110)
Key trend: The under is 4-1 in Iowa State's last five games.
SportsLine expert Chip Patterson is 8-3 in his last 11 CBB picks.
Patterson:"The two-day turnaround from facing quality Big 12 foes on Saturday could leave the legs a little light here on Monday night, and it actually works in Houston's favor to try and slow the game down to prevent Iowa State from forcing more turnovers to create easy offense. Houston's defense at home has even exceeded the oddsmakers expectations, with the under going 9-5 in home games. The first meeting between these two teams had a total of 129.5 and finished at 110 (57-53), so with the short rest I think we see a similar score and another under."
Here's what else SportsLine is saying about the game:The Projection Model has a "B" pick on the total, while having "C" picks on the spread and moneyline.Get one week of picks from SportsLine completely free with the promo codeNEWSLETTER*

Virginia at Virginia Tech, 7 p.m. | TV: ESPN
The Projection: Over 126.5 (-110)| Grade: B -- Moderate
SportsLine's Projection Model has a "B" grade on the total with "C" grades for the moneyline and total for the contest. The over is 4-2 in Virginia's last six road games, so we'll look for that trend to hold up in this ACC showdown.
