Huff HIC huff HIC
Tim, doggy hiccups can seem to come out of nowhere.
They last for minutes at a time
And can even throw your dog off guard a little.
So like many dog parents, youve probably wondered if your dogs hiccups are normal
And what you can do to help them go away.
But first, let me clear up 2 popular hiccup remedies to AVOID:
DONT try to scare your dogs hiccups away
And DONT try the tongue trick and pull on their tongue.
Although these are common practices to get rid of hiccups
They can really startle your pup.
Instead, the next time your dog gets the hiccups
Pay close attention.
Because the truth is, your dogs hiccups can actually mean LOTS of different things.
In fact, they can even give you a read on your dogs mood.
So the BEST way to help your pup with their hiccups is
Recognize what could be causing them...
And tackle the underlying hiccup-trigger at hand.
So today, Im sharing 4 of the most common reasons your pup gets hiccups.
And of course my easy and EFFECTIVE methods to help ease them!
Huff HIC! Your dog might get the hiccups if
Theyre eating or drinking too fast
When your pup practically inhales their food or gulps down their water
They tend to swallow lots of air which often leads to hiccups!1
So if your dog gets hiccups after drinking
Try rationing out their water by putting less in their bowl, and filling it up more throughout the day.
That way, they wont gulp all the water (and air) down in one go.
If your pup gets hiccups around mealtime
I recommend making their very own slow feeder.
Just grab a muffin pan and divvy up your dogs food into the individual muffin cups.
This can help your pup slow down and properly digest their food
And make mealtime a little more fun!
Theyre playing REALLY hard
When your dog runs, jumps, plays, and pants, they can also swallow lots of air
And bam get the hiccups.
Now, if your dog is having a good time, I suggest simply waiting it out.
But if their hiccups seem to bother them, try offering a little water
And gently stroke the top of their noggin, ears, neck, and chin.
This can encourage your dog to slow down, take a break, and ease their panting
Which can also help ease their hiccups.
Theyre feeling stressed or anxious
When your dog feels anxious or stressed, it can cause their heart to beat a little faster
Which in some cases, can cause hiccups.3
So if your pup hiccups while showing other signs of anxiousness
Like pacing, whining, or hiding
Try calming them down with their favorite treats, a gentle back scratch, chest massage, or encouraging words.
These tactics can help lower their stress levels and heart rate
And help them feel more relaxed and at ease.
Theyre just super excited
Your dogs heart ALSO beats faster when theyre excited.
So when your pup races to the door to greet you
Or spots you grabbing their leash for a walk
They might get the hiccups out of pure excitement.
Now, sometimes your pup might get over-excited and lead to naughty behaviors
Like jumping on people, or ignoring commands.
To help them settle down, I recommend redirecting their attention with a treat or toy
And using calming tactics to set the mood like talking in a soft, gentle voice.
Important Note:
If your dog gets the hiccups daily, or they last for hours at a time
I recommend checking in with your veterinarian to rule out any bigger health issues at hand.
Just remember, Tim although doggy hiccups can be fairly normal
Its important to understand the reason BEHIND them.
That way, you can give your pup the support they need
While effectively helping ease their hiccups.
And when in doubt, show your dog youre there for them with lots of love and words of encouragement.
To you and your best friend,
Dr. Marty
