Family Myth or Reality? My Search for the Truth
Let me tell you a story. My great-grandfather Edmund loved boating. Every summer, hed take his 10 children to Indian Lake in north-central Ohio, whiling away their days swimming, playing and drifting through the lakes many coves.
Tragically, boating was also part of Edmunds death. According to family legend, he had a heart attack while operating his boat alone and drove it straight into paradise. But, according to the story, that destination wasnt supernaturalhe literally crashed his boat into a local sandbar called Paradise Island.
The story paints a picture: my great-grandfather dying doing what he loved. I never met him, but I now have a much better understanding of who he was and what was important to him.

But is the story accurate? At first glance, it seems unlikely. We all have family stories that sound too good to be true. Maybe youre supposedly descended from a famous person (George Washington, anyone?) or the apocryphal Cherokee princess. Or lore might have your ancestor taking part in an important historical event despite records to the contrary.
My work at Family Tree has allowed me to closely examine the stories in my own family. Expert advice from our writers and editors have connected me with important websites and record sets. And theyve taught me invaluable research techniques that help me shed light on family lore.
Imagine my surprise that the family story about Edmunds death may be true, after all. While working on an issue of Family Tree about historical newspapers, I found an article from The Lima (OH) News. It stated 53-year-old Edmund was found slumped over in the boat, drifting toward Paradise Island. Sure enough, Google Maps includes that place name near the southern coast of Indian Lake.
