What is Heart Health?
Taking care of your heart can lead to a longer, healthier life. But how?
Check your heart health
Heart health is exactly what it says on the tin - how healthy your heart is.
More specifically, its about the overall health of your cardiovascular system - how your body pumps blood - and all the good things in your blood - around the body.
Blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and overall cardiac function are all included in heart health.
Why is it important?
According to the British Heart Foundation, coronary heart disease (CHD) is responsible for 68,000 deaths per year in the UK. Thats one person every 8 minutes.
Keeping your heart healthy through diet, exercise and lifestyle choices is the best way to protect yourself against heart disease.
What causes CHD?
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is caused by the blockage of blood in your arteries due to a build-up of fatty substances.
This happens over time. The walls of your arteries become furred up with fatty deposits in a process called atherosclerosis.
Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, high cholesterol and diabetes can all cause atherosclerosis.
The NHS lists the symptoms of CHD as:
chest pain
shortness of breath
pain in your neck, shoulders jaws or arms
feeling faint
feeling sick

Monitoring your heart health
You can check your heart health using blood testing.
Checking markers such as LDL and HDL can help shed light on cholesterol levels. Too much bad cholesterol (LDL) and not enough good cholesterol (HDL) and you may need to change your diet and lifestyle.
Our Baseline Health Check is an at-home blood test that can accurately check and monitor your heart health. It checks key markers related to your cardiovascular health - including cholesterol. It also checks a host of other markers that can help you understand your overall health too, such as whether youre getting enough vitamin D and B12.

How to prevent heart disease and improve your heart health
Preventing heart disease and strengthening your heart health ss all about making smart choices every day.
Diet
Start by loading up your plate with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Avoid foods that are high in saturated fats like fatty cuts of meat, butter and full-fat dairy.
You should also avoid foods high in salt, such as processed foods, as too much sodium can increase your blood pressure, leading to CHD.
Sugary snacks and drinks can also spell trouble for your heart health, so try to enjoy them in moderation.
Exercise
Get moving with activities you love, whether it's dancing, hiking, or hitting the gym. Aim for at least 150 minutes of heart-pumping exercise each week to get that blood flowing and your heart pumping.
Regular exercise helps to strengthen the heart muscles, making it more resilient and better able to meet the body's demands for oxygen-rich blood.
It also helps to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol levels, and manage weight, all of which are crucial factors in maintaining a healthy heart.
Lifestyle choices
As we mentioned earlier, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can lead to poor heart health.
Cutting down on your tobacco and alcohol intake can help with improving your heart health. It can also make it easier to exercise, which will help improve your overall health, too.
The NHS recommends no more than 14 units of alcohol a week (about 6 pints). But the less you drink, the healthier youll be.
