New York Democrats unveil more proposed firearm regulations
New York Attorney General Letitia James
Taylor Montgomery | June 10, 2024
Members of the New York State Senate proposed new firearms regulations last week, potentially adding to a legal regime already opposed to the Second Amendment.
Democratic lawmakers said in a release
that the legislation would strengthen gun safety measures and ensure deadly weapons stay out of the wrong hands, contending that the new proposals would be responsible and effective. Among the new measures are more restrictions on the open carry of long guns, a ten-day waiting period for firearm purchases, controls on the sale of pistol converters, crackdowns on the firearm industry, and expanded red flag gun confiscation laws.
Gun violence has gone beyond a critical point in our nation, turning everyday places into sites of unimaginable tragedy and cutting our childrens lives short, New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Collins remarked. The measures we are taking today demonstrate our unwavering commitment to protecting our communities and ensuring that no parent, child, group or person has to live in fear of gun violence. By enacting these common-sense reforms, we are taking further significant steps towards creating a safer New York for all.
The package also includes a voluntary waiver of the right to purchase firearms and required merchant category codes for those who conduct business with gun sellers.
Among the new measures are more restrictions on the open carry of long guns, a ten-day waiting period for firearm purchases, controls on the sale of pistol converters, crackdowns on the firearm industry, and expanded red flag laws.
Making our communities safe starts with educating gun owners and limiting accessibility to weapons of violence, New York State Senate Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris added. I am proud we are taking serious steps to tackle this critical issue. We must keep our communities safe and prevent guns from taking more lives.
New York already has some of the most severe firearm restrictions in the country: gun control organization Everytown for Gun Safety ranks them in second place.
New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul approved a bill called the Concealed Carry Improvement Act after the Supreme Court overturned their law which forced concealed carry applicants to show proper cause before they obtained a permit. The new law banned carrying firearms in churches, public transportation, and other locations in an attempt to circumvent the decision from the Supreme Court.
New York Democratic Attorney General Letitia James previously said that the regulations are common sense and vowed she would use every tool to protect New Yorkers from senseless gun violence. Yet the state has faced several lawsuits from residents who say they have been improperly deprived of their right to self-defense.
