What is love?
Not from a philosophical perspectiveIm sure youve got other things to do todaybut what causes that feeling?
The unromantic answer is a cocktail of brain chemicals, released at certain times in certain amounts. Dopamine. Oxytocin. Cortisol (because lets be honest, falling in love is stressful).
In fact, its that stress that makes you lovestruck. Elevated cortisol and lower serotonin are responsible for intrusive thoughts. Next time you cant get someone out of your head, thats why.
Infatuation also makes you release dopaminethe neurotransmitter at the heart of the reward system. Its a similar experience to the highs you get from drugs or alcohol. One study from the University of California even showed that male fruit flies that were sexually rejected drank four times as much alcohol as fruit flies that mated with female fruit flies.
And being in love can also affect more than just your mood. Research suggests all sorts of benefits, including:
Pain suppression Stronger memory More creativity
Theres also some evidence that the state of being in love deactivates certain neural pathways responsible for negative emotions.
And in the long run?
Studies show that people can stay in love for decades, but the nature of the love changes. Same dopamine and oxytocin rewards, less stress. The rollercoaster of emotions doesnt usually last that long, but the benefits stick around.
Simply the best
Last week, Glamour magazine named Biotic as the best probiotic for women. Not bad, if we say so ourselves. See what else they said on our Instagram.
FIND OUT NOW
Looking inwards
Sometimes, were better at showing love to others than to ourselves. But learning to direct compassion inwards is essential for our mental health and personal growth. This is how to do it.
TAKE A LOOK
On a personal note
I've been studying the concept of success in both my private and personal life for a few years now. Turns outendlessly fascinating concept. It's clear that to have a successful life you need to nurture successful relationships.
This is nerdy, but while running Heights, we decided to use OKRs (objectives and key results) as our management system to deliver great results. And it got me thinking... If my marriage is as important as my company, maybe I should approach it with that level of dedication too.
So my wife and I made a relationship OKR framework together and have been running our marriage with this system ever since, with probably more success than we expected.
Love is emotional, and there's an art to romance. But staying happy in marriageIm starting to believe there's science to that success, too. What do you think? Sensible or verging on to madness?
With love and romance,
Dan
