The secret to learning new skills
Issue 266
Lighting a spark
My intention for 2024 is creativity. I want to explore what it means to me, learn more about it, and hopefully, become more creative myself.
Its a concept I find daunting. After all, arent some people born creative and some of us arent? Turns out its not that simple. By the age of 35, 95% of our behaviours, emotional reactions, habits, attitudes, and perceptions are set. But with a bit of work, we can rewire our brains, allowing ourselves to discover new skills. Like creativity.
The process seems fairly simple:
Create intentions
Reflect on what you want to create.
Live your intentions
Act and feel as if your intentions are already realised.
Harness the power of neuroplasticity
Find ways to learn and exercise your brain every day.
Think positive
Frame yourself and your surroundings in an optimistic way.
Easier said than done. But again, we can break them down into more steps. Take exercising our brainsthat might mean crosswords, sudokus, Wordle, whatever. But it can also mean practising some simple mindfulness.
And even if youve never intentionally explored mindfulness, chances are youre already doing it in some form or another. Its just about framing your experience differently. Here are 5 ways of practising mindfulness that youre probably already doing.

On a personal note
Im writing from Cape Town, as Im living out one of my intentionsto travel life well. Since becoming a dad, I quickly realised how things that were easy were now complex, and I didnt have the same sense of freedom.
The definition of a happy life, according to all the self help books Ive read, is that its never about the destination. So Ive become especially intentional about travelling the journey well.
Winter in London and I dont want to do that? Solvedits summer in South Africa.
Of course, this intentional behaviour takes planning, communication, multiple changes.
But once I have more core intentions, I want to make sure that Im not compromising them because its too difficult.
Designing an intentional lifestyle doesnt happen overnight, in fact, I feel like mine has taken the best part of 5 years, but the best time to start? Yesterday. The second best time to start? You guessed it, today.
With love from the sun,
Dan
