Cannabidiol is a popular natural remedy used for many common ailments. Better known as CBD, it is one of more than 100 chemical compounds called cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant, Cannabis sativa (1Trusted Source). Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, which means it causes the sensation of getting high thats often associated with cannabis. However, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive. This quality makes CBD an appealing option for those who are looking for relief from pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of cannabis or other side effects related to some pharmaceutical drugs. CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant and then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut oil or hemp seed oil. CBD can be found in a variety of products online and in stores, including dietary supplements, bath soaks, drinks, and food. It continues to gain momentum in the health and wellness world, with some scientific studies finding that it may ease symptoms of conditions such as chronic pain and anxiety. But is it the right choice for you? This article covers 6 evidence-backed health benefits of CBD, as well as potential side effects and safety concerns related to CBD products. Vane Nunes/Shutterstock Heads up: Is CBD legal? Hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3% THC) are legal on the federal level but are still illegal under some state laws. Cannabis-derived CBD products are illegal on the federal level but are legal under some state laws. Check your states laws and those of anywhere you travel. And keep in mind that nonprescription CBD products are not FDA-approvedTrusted Source and may be inaccurately labeled. 1. May relieve pain Cannabis has been used to treat pain since as far back as 2900 B.C. (2Trusted Source). More recently, scientists have discovered that certain components of cannabis, including CBD, are responsible for its pain-relieving effects. The human body contains a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system, which is involved in regulating a variety of functions, including sleep, appetite, pain sensation, and immune system response (3Trusted Source). The body produces endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system. Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by affecting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation, and interacting with neurotransmitters (4Trusted Source). Some research suggests that CBD may be effective for certain types of pain, including nerve pain and back pain, when used on its own. However, it seems to be most effective when combined with THC (5Trusted Source, 6Trusted Source). Several human studies have found that a combination of CBD and THC is effective in treating pain related to multiple sclerosis (MS) and arthritis. An oral spray called Sativex (nabiximols), which is a 1:1 combination of THC and CBD, is approved in several countries to treat pain related to MS. A study that included 47 people with MS examined the effects of taking Sativex for a month. The participants experienced improvements in pain, walking ability, and muscle spasms (7Trusted Source). Still, the study didnt include a control group, so placebo effects cannot be ruled out (7Trusted Source). In one review, researchers noted that Sativex may benefit those with MS-associated neuropathic pain and chronic severe neuropathic pain. The review also found that Sativex may help relieve anxiety and stress, which are major drivers of chronic pain (8Trusted Source). Additionally, some research suggests that CBD may relieve symptoms of rheumatic diseases such as fibromyalgia. A study that included survey data from 2,701 people with fibromyalgia found that those who used CBD for pain relief generally reported slight to significant improvement in symptoms (9Trusted Source). And according to preclinical evidence from rodent studies, CBD may have beneficial effects on pain and inflammation related to arthritis, but human studies are lacking (10Trusted Source). Although researchers are cautiously optimistic that CBD may be helpful in the treatment of some types of pain, especially when combined with THC, more high quality studies are needed to determine its effectiveness in pain management. SUMMARY CBD, especially in combination with THC, may be effective for reducing certain types of pain associated with conditions such as MS and fibromyalgia. Still, more research is needed to investigate its potential use in pain management 2. Could reduce symptoms related to some mental health disorders Anxiety disorders and other mental health disorders can have devastating impacts on overall health and well-being. Mental health disorders are often treated with pharmaceutical drugs, which can cause a number of side effects, including drowsiness, agitation, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, and headaches (11Trusted Source). Whats more, medications like benzodiazepines have the potential for dependence and may lead to substance use disorder. CBD oil has shown promise as a treatment for some mental health disorders, such as anxiety disorders, leading many people who live with these conditions to become interested in this natural approach. In a Brazilian study, 57 men received either oral CBD or a placebo 90 minutes before they underwent a simulated public speaking test. The researchers found that a 300-mg dose of CBD was the most effective at significantly reducing anxiety during the test (12Trusted Source). Little to no effect was reported in those who took the placebo, a 150-mg dose of CBD, or a 600-mg dose of CBD (12Trusted Source). CBD oil has been used to safely treat insomnia and anxiety in children with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a type of anxiety disorder (13Trusted Source). A small 2019 study also found that CBD was effective for reducing PTSD-related symptoms, including nightmares, in adults (14Trusted Source). Several other studies have found that CBD may be effective for those with social anxiety and other anxiety-related disorders (15Trusted Source). Even though some people find that CBD improves symptoms related to depression, human evidence of CBDs potential antidepressant abilities is currently limited (15Trusted Source). However, results from several studies suggest that it may help reduce depressive symptoms in those with cannabis use disorders (15Trusted Source). Research investigating the effects of CBD on symptoms of anxiety and depression is ongoing. In fact, a study evaluating the possible effectiveness of 150300 mg of CBD per day for 12 weeks on anxiety and depression symptoms in people with bipolar disorder is expected to be completed in April 2022 (15Trusted Source). SUMMARY CBD use has been shown to improve some symptoms related to anxiety disorders. Researchers are currently investigating how CBD may be used in the treatment of other mental health disorders. 3. May alleviate certain cancer-related symptoms CBD may help reduce some cancer-related symptoms and side effects related to cancer treatment, such as nausea, vomiting, and pain. An older study looked at the effects of CBD and THC in 177 people with cancer-related pain who did not experience relief from pain medication. Those treated with an extract containing both compounds experienced a significant reduction in pain compared with those who received only THC extract (16Trusted Source). A review of five studies found some evidence that Sativex may help reduce cancer-related pain in some people (17Trusted Source). However, findings from studies investigating the effects of cannabis and cannabinoids like CBD on cancer-related nausea, pain, and decreased appetite have been mixed (18Trusted Source). Even though CBD may be helpful for some people with cancer, more research is needed to determine whether CBD should be used more regularly in cancer symptom management. If you have cancer and are interested in using CBD or other cannabis-derived products, its important to consult your healthcare team. These products may not be safe, appropriate, or effective for all people with cancer. SUMMARY Though CBD may improve certain cancer-related symptoms in some people, research findings are currently mixed and more studies are needed to assess its effectiveness and safety. 4. May have neuroprotective properties Researchers believe that CBDs ability to act on the endocannabinoid system and other brain-signaling systems may provide benefits for those with neurological disorders. In fact, one of the most studied uses for CBD is in treating neurological disorders such as epilepsy and MS. Though research in this area is still relatively new, several studies have shown promising results. Sativex has been shown to be a safe and effective way to reduce muscle spasticity in people with MS. It reduced spasms in 75% of 276 people with MS who were experiencing muscle spasticity that was resistant to medications (19Trusted Source). In another study, researchers gave 214 people with severe epilepsy 0.92.3 grams of CBD oil per pound (25 grams per kg) of body weight. Their seizures reduced by a median of 36.5% (20Trusted Source). One more study found that CBD oil significantly reduced seizure activity in children with Dravet syndrome, a complex childhood epilepsy disorder, compared with a placebo (21Trusted Source). However, some people in both of these studies experienced adverse reactions associated with CBD treatment, such as convulsions, fever, and fatigue. CBD has also been researched for its potential effectiveness in treating several other neurological diseases. For example, several studies have shown that treatment with CBD may improve quality of life and sleep quality in people with Parkinsons disease (22Trusted Source). However, researchers note that theres currently a lack of high quality data. That means theres not enough evidence available to support the use of CBD in the clinical treatment of Parkinsons disease (22Trusted Source). But one CBD product has actually been approved by the FDA for use in the treatment of several seizure disorders. Epidiolex, a prescription cannabidiol product, was approved for use by the FDA in 2018 for the treatment of seizures associated with two severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. In 2020, Epidiolex received FDA approval for the treatment of seizures caused by tuberous sclerosis complex, a rare genetic disease that causes benign tumors to grow in the brain and other areas of the body (23Trusted Source). SUMMARY CBD may be effective for treating seizures related to several health conditions. The prescription CBD product Epidiolex has received FDA approval to treat seizures related to rare, seizure-causing conditions such as Dravet syndrome. 5. May benefit heart health Some research has linked CBD with several benefits for the heart and circulatory system, including the ability to lower high blood pressure. High blood pressure is linked to higher risks of a number of health conditions, including stroke, heart attack, and metabolic syndrome (24Trusted Source). Studies indicate that CBD may be beneficial for people with high blood pressure. In a small study, 9 healthy men were treated with 600 mg of CBD oil. The CBD treatment reduced resting blood pressure compared with a placebo (25Trusted Source). In the same study, the men also took part in stress tests that normally increase blood pressure. Interestingly, the single dose of CBD led the men to experience a smaller blood pressure increase than normal in response to these tests (25Trusted Source). Another study that included 26 healthy men found that treatment with 600 mg of CBD for 7 days led to significant reductions in blood pressure in the short term compared with a placebo group. However, the effect was lost after 7 days (26Trusted Source). The CBD group maintained lower blood pressure levels in response to stress compared with the placebo group after repeated doses over time. The researchers also found that the CBD group had reduced arterial stiffness and improved blood flow through their arteries after repeated CBD dosing compared to the placebo group (26Trusted Source). Overall, these findings are encouraging, but we need more studies of the potential benefits of CBD treatment on heart health. SUMMARY Though more human studies are needed, CBD may benefit heart health in several ways, including by reducing blood pressure and improving artery function. 6. Other potential benefits CBD has been studied for its role in treating a number of health issues other than those outlined above. Though more studies are needed, CBD is thought to provide the following health benefits: Antipsychotic effects. Studies suggest that CBD may help people with schizophrenia and other mental health conditions by reducing symptoms of psychosis (27Trusted Source). Substance abuse treatment. CBD may be helpful for relieving anxiety and depression in people who have a dependence on certain drugs, including heroin (28Trusted Source, 29Trusted Source). Possible extension of life in those with glioblastoma. Recent studies suggest that treatment with a combination of CBD and THC may help extend the life of some people with an aggressive form of cancer called glioblastoma, yet research is limited (30Trusted Source). Possible improvement in sleep. Some studies suggest that CBD might help improve sleep in people with certain sleep disorders, though more research is needed (31Trusted Source, 32Trusted Source). SUMMARY Some studies suggest that CBD may help with substance abuse disorders, mental health disorders, and certain types of cancers. However, we need more research in humans to find out more about these potential effects. Potential side effects of CBD products Though CBD is generally well-tolerated and is considered safe, it may cause adverse reactions in some people. Side effects noted in studies include (33Trusted Source, 34Trusted Source): diarrhea changes in appetite and weight fatigue Other side effects, including abnormal liver function test results, drowsiness, sedation, and pneumonia, have been reported in childhood epilepsy studies. But these effects could stem from CBD interacting with other medications, such as clobazam (34Trusted Source). In fact, CBD interacts with several medications, including pain medications, antidepressants, seizure medications, and diabetes medications. Before you try CBD oil, discuss it with a healthcare professional to assess safety and avoid potentially harmful interactions (35Trusted Source, 36Trusted Source). Additionally, its important to note that the market is currently saturated with CBD products, many of which are low quality. CBD is added to foods, beverages, dietary supplements, and body care products, and these items are often marketed as a way to improve stress, pain, and sleep issues. However, this does not mean you should include any of these items in your diet or wellness routine. Although some evidence suggests that CBD may be helpful for certain aspects of health, dosing varies widely in research studies. Its difficult to determine what dose is most appropriate for treating specific health needs. Whats more, many products contain a blend of ingredients, not just CBD. For example, dietary supplements that contain CBD plus a blend of herbal ingredients may not be safe for everyone, as many herbs have the potential to interact with commonly prescribed medications. Before you use a CBD product, talk with a healthcare professional to discuss appropriate dosing and any other questions you may have. If you do decide to use a CBD product, choose one that has been third-party tested for quality and purity. NuLeaf Naturals and Bluebird Botanicals sell CBD products that undergo testing by accredited third-party laboratories and offer batch reports on their websites. SUMMARY Although CBD is generally considered safe, it can cause adverse effects such as diarrhea and fatigue in some people. It may also interact with certain medications, causing side effects that may be harmful. The bottom line CBD oil has been studied for its potential role in easing the symptoms of many common health conditions, including anxiety and neurological disorders. Plus, it may benefit heart health and help relieve certain types of pain. Keep in mind that some of these health benefits are related to the use of CBD combined with THC, not CBD alone. Research investigating the effects of CBD on certain conditions is ongoing, and there is still much to be learned about the potential uses of CBD. If youre interested in trying CBD to manage a health condition or to support overall health, check with a healthcare professional first. They can help you decide whether adding a CBD product to your routine is appropriate and help you choose the best product.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is often covered in the media, and you may see it touted as an add-in booster to your post-workout smoothie or morning coffee. You can even buy a CBD-infused sports bra. But what exactly is CBD? And why is it so popular?
How is cannabidiol different from marijuana, cannabis and hemp?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is the second most prevalent active ingredient in cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, a cousin of marijuana, or manufactured in a laboratory. One of hundreds of components in marijuana, CBD does not cause a "high" by itself. According to a report from the World Health Organization, "In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD."
Is cannabidiol legal?
CBD is readily obtainable in most parts of the United States, though its exact legal status has been in flux. All 50 states have laws legalizing CBD with varying degrees of restriction. In December 2015, the FDA eased the regulatory requirements to allow researchers to conduct CBD trials. In 2018, the Farm Bill made hemp legal in the United States, making it virtually impossible to keep CBD illegal that would be like making oranges legal, but keeping orange juice illegal. The Farm Bill removed all hemp-derived products, including CBD, from the Controlled Substances Act, which criminalizes the possession of drugs. In essence, this means that CBD is legal if it comes from hemp, but not if it comes from cannabis (marijuana) even though it is the exact same molecule. Currently, many people obtain CBD online without a medical marijuana license, which is legal in most states.
The evidence for cannabidiol health benefits
CBD has been touted for a wide variety of health issues, but the strongest scientific evidence is for its effectiveness in treating some of the cruelest childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically dont respond to antiseizure medications. In numerous studies, CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and, in some cases, stop them altogether. Epidiolex, which contains CBD, is the first cannabis-derived medicine approved by the FDA for these conditions.
Animal studies, and self-reports or research in humans, suggest CBD may also help with:
Anxiety Studies and clinical trials are exploring the common report that CBD can reduce anxiety.
Insomnia. Studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep.
Chronic pain. Further human studies are needed to substantiate claims that CBD helps control pain. One animal study from the European Journal of Pain suggests CBD could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis when applied to skin. Other research identifies how CBD may inhibit inflammatory and neuropathic pain, which are difficult treat.
Addiction. CBD can help lower cravings for tobacco and heroin under certain conditions, according to some research in humans. Animal models of addiction suggest it may also help lessen cravings for alcohol, cannabis, opiates, and stimulants.
Is CBD safe?
Side effects of CBD include nausea, fatigue and irritability. CBD can increase the level of blood thinning and other medicines in your blood by competing for the liver enzymes that break down these drugs. Grapefruit has a similar effect with certain medicines.
People taking high doses of CBD may show abnormalities in liver related blood tests. Many non-prescription drugs, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), have this same effect. So, you should let your doctor know if you are regularly using CBD.
Many people understand the basics of lotions and creams and how they moisturize and nourish the skin. But what about CBD mixed with creams and balms? How do CBD topicals (ie: a CBD ointment) work? What will a CBD topical do for you? By now, youve probably seen CBD products in the form of oils and tinctures. True enough, most CBD products are sold as edibles to be orally ingested. However, thats just one way of using CBD. At New Phase Blends, we also have CBD balms and creams or what the industry refers to as CBD topicals. So, how do CBD topicals work? TL;DR The term CBD topical is a classification of CBD products made for the skin. The skin is able to absorb the nutrients from the topical cream and deliver them into the blood stream and surrounding areas. Then, the endocannabinoid system can respond to CBD use by offering effects like pain relief or inflammatory responsesUsing CBD Topicals A Brief History Different forms of a topical CBD balm have been used to ease pain and inflammation and treat various skin conditions in ancient China, India, and Latin America for thousands of years. Unfortunately, modern society has developed a bad habit of ignoring natural remedies proven to be effective. Its only been a few years since scientific research established the medicinal benefits of cannabis extracts like CBD. If youre not a stranger to muscle aches or a persistent skin condition, the chances are that you have heard of CBD, a substance thats been in the spotlight in recent years. Cbd Topical On Hand CBD balm is a natural remedy for pain and inflammation and is becoming a favorite among athletes and the skincare industry. What is CBD and Why Should I Care? Hemp Vs Marijuana Chart Cannabidiol, commonly referred to as CBD, is a plant chemical compound (aka cannabinoid) found in cannabis plants specifically, industrial hemp. It is different from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in marijuana that intoxicates and produces the mental high. For those who are unaware, hemp and marijuana both make up the cannabis plant species. CBD cannot make you high, at all. This is because most CBD products contain less than 0.3 percent of THC by dry weight to comply with legislation. CBD seems to excel at offering relief from things like: joint pain sore muscles aches and pains arthritis pain nerve pain It can help with other forms of symptomatic relief, too. These are just the most commonly talked about benefits. One of the reasons CBD has gained widespread acceptance is that it has no adverse side effects. Legally speaking, CBD products need to have a below 0.03% THC content, meaning they are non-psychoactive and non-habit forming. Whether used internally or topically, CBD will not make you feel high. I cant stress this enough. Exploring the Human Skin All humans have skin everyone knows this. What you might not know is that the skin is actually the largest organ in the human body. Its composed of two primary layers: the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the top layer of your skin that you can see. It contains freckles, scars, pores, and other visible characteristics. The dermis is the layer of skin below your dermis. The dermis contains hair follicles, nerve and blood vessel endings, and different skin cells than the epidermis. Check out this image of the skin layers: Diagram Of Skin There is also a hypodermis, but for the sake of time, we will be focusing on the epidermis and dermis. How Do CBD Topicals Work? Unlike over-the-counter topical relief creams, CBD topical balm doesnt mask the pain or inflammation but instead eases bodily pain and offers natural non-habit forming and irritation-free pain relief. Related article: CBD for Knee Pain CBD topicals are able to work so well because of the presence of the endocannabinoid system in your body. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex signaling system in your body that comprises cannabinoid receptors (such as the CB1 and CB2 Receptors), enzymes, and endocannabinoids (cannabinoids produced within.); it is thought to regulate different processes and functions in the body including sleep, memory, reproduction, and fertility, immune response and so on. Endocannabinoid System Receptors When you apply topical CBD products to any part of your body, your skin absorbs the cannabinoid, but it doesnt get to your bloodstream. Instead, it interacts with the cannabinoid receptors nearby, which sends a signal to the endocannabinoid system to alleviate pain in the affected area of your body. This is how CBD topicals work at a basic level. What are CBD Skin Care Products? There are many different kinds of CBD skincare products on the market. From CBD creams, to gummies, to oil tinctures there are usually several other hemp-derived CBD products that can offer you relief that goes beyond skin deep relief. As the name suggests, skincare items like CBD topical balms and creams have been infused with CBD extract from the hemp plant and can help heal and soothe the skin. Although CBD is the main ingredient in these balms, it is usually complemented by other elements like Shea butter and coconut oil to naturally protect, nourish, and moisturize every type of skin. CBD balm is safe, easy to use, and can be applied to almost any part of the body to relieve several problems like soreness, inflammation, and irritated skin. Topical CBD Ointment Treatments Like any other organ, the skin needs proper care. From a young age, your parents likely told you things like put on your sunscreen or make sure you wear your hat. Our skin, although incredibly resilient, is also damaged periodically as we age. Sun damage, chemical damage, and acne are just a fraction of the things that can hurt our skin permanently. Discover: CBD Ointment To prevent and minimize skin damage, dermatologists recommend taking two approaches to a proper skincare regimen: Preventative treatment Reactionary treatment An example of preventative treatment would be applying sunscreen to your skin before you go outside. Your skin would be covered in a small layer of sunscreen that protects it from UV rays the invisible rays in sunlight that burn your skin. Your sunscreens SPF rating determines how long you can stay under the sun before reapplying it. Applying Cbd Cream On Shoulder Reactionary treatments, on the other hand, are done in response to something that damaged your skin. For example, after a long day on the beach, you go home and realize you have some sunburn on your cheeks. The reactionary treatment would be to apply aloe, which soothes the pain and stimulates the repair of skin cells. Some CBD creams are designed as a reactionary treatment to sunburn, inflammation, and pain.
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a chemical compound found in the cannabis sativa plant. When applied topically or consumed through smoke inhalation or edible consumption, CBD interacts with neuroreceptors in your endocannabinoid system, which sends signals between your cells to help regulate your movement, mood, homeostasis and immune system. CBD research is growing, too. Here are nine ways studies suggest CBD oil could benefit your health.
1. Offset Anxiety and Depression
CBDs ability to calm is perhaps its most popular effect and the reason its use is so widespread. A 2017 study in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry tested the anxiety levels of 57 men in a simulated public speaking test. Some received a placebo while others received either 150 milligrams, 300 milligrams or 600 milligrams of CBD before their speeches. Those who received 300 milligrams of CBD experienced significantly reduced anxiety during the test compared to those who received the placebo. Interestingly, participants who received either 150 or 600 milligrams of CBD experienced more anxiety during the test than the 300 milligrams group.
Meanwhile, at least one study in mice revealed CBD had effects similar to the antidepressant imipramine. Human trials are needed, though, to confirm whether CBD can induce this same antidepressant reaction in our bodies.
2. Treat Select Epilepsy Syndromes
In some instances, CBD can be used to treat epileptic seizures.
In 2018, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of CBD under the brand name Epidiolex to treat seizures resulting from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrometwo rare forms of epilepsyin patients at least 2 years old.
Three well-vetted studies provide the basis of support for the FDAs decision. In these trials, 516 patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome received either Epidiolex or a placebo. Epidiolex, when taken along with other prescribed medications, decreased the frequency of participants seizures compared to the placebo.
3. Reduce PTSD Symptoms
In a small 2018 study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 11 people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) received CBD along with routine psychiatric care for eight weeks in an outpatient psychiatric clinic. Ten of the 11 experienced a decrease in their PTSD symptoms. CBD was generally well tolerated, the researchers write.
Margaret Rajnic, a doctor of nursing practice experienced in medical cannabis and CBD, emphasizes the importance of using therapy in tandem with any type of cannabis or CBD for PTSD. There is an amount of therapy that is needed for PTSD, she says. But CBD will give you that little bit of decreased anxiety.
Four other human trials from 2012 to 2016 suggest CBD reduces PTSD symptoms, although some include THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the main mind-altering element in cannabis. When THC and CBD work together, they create whats called an entourage effect, complementing each others benefits and potency. For example, taking the same dose of THC and CBD together tempers the high from THC, while just a little THC paired with more CBD enhances the effects of the CBD.
4. Treat Opioid Addiction
Some studiesboth preclinical animal and human clinical trialssuggest CBD could be used to help treat people who are dependent on opioids.
In one such study, researchers administered CBD to people with heroin use disorder. Over the course of a week, CBD significantly reduced heroin users cue-induced cravings, withdrawal anxiety, resting heart rate and salivary cortisol levels. No serious adverse effects were found.
Other studies find CBD helpful in reducing various psychiatric and medical symptoms like anxiety, insomnia and pain in patients with substance use disorders, indicating that CBD may be an effective treatment for opioid addiction. However, further studies are necessary.
5. Alleviate ALS Symptoms
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a disease that causes nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to deteriorate, resulting in loss of muscle control that worsens over time. Its not yet understood exactly why ALS occurs, although it can be hereditary in some cases. Theres no known cure, and there are only two FDA-approved medications to help treat ALS symptoms.
Research suggests people with ALS can benefit from the entourage effect created by the combination of THC and CBD, similar to people with PTSD. In a 2019 study, patients received a combination of THC and CBD in varying doses depending on their needs and preferences. Those with mild, moderate or severe spasticity (muscle tightness and stiffness) due to ALS reported high levels of satisfaction with the treatment, and those with moderate to severe spasticity reported higher satisfaction rates than those with mild spasticity.
6. Relieve Unmanageable Pain
In 2005, Canada approved the use of Sativex, an oromucosal (absorbed in the lining of the mouth) spray with equal proportions of THC and CBD, for the treatment of multiple sclerosis-related central neuropathic pain. In 2007, Canada approved the medicines use again for cancer pain that proved unresponsive to other medications.
Meanwhile, continued studies in the U.S. indicate CBD is effective in treating chronic, non-cancer pain. In one 2020 study, researchers administered CBD topically to a group of patients with symptomatic peripheral neuropathy (a result of brain nerve and spinal cord nerve damage) while another group with the same condition received a placebo. Results showed a significant reduction in intense, sharp pains and cold, itchy sensations in those who used the topical CBD compared to those who used the placebo. No participants reported adverse side effects.
When introduced topically, CBD oil doesnt affect the systemic issue as it might if it were introduced directly into the bloodstream. Instead, topical CBD is more localized and treats pain in a certain area. Since its more direct, it may have a more pronounced effect.
7. Ease Diabetic Complications
For starters, tests on human cells found that CBD helps reduce the effects of high glucose levels on other cells in the body, which typically precedes the development of diabetes and various complications. Researchers concluded that with further studies, CBD could have significant benefits when used in patients with diabetes, diabetic complications and plaque buildup in artery walls.
In another small study, 13 patients with type 2 diabetes who werent on insulin treatment were given both CBD and a placebo (in lieu of insulin). Researchers found CBD decreased their levels of resistin (which causes resistance to insulin, the protein that regulates sugar levels) and increased their levels of glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (a hormone that ensures a sufficient release of insulin from digested food) compared to their baselines before they started the test. These results suggest CBD could be a natural treatment for diabetes by helping the body regulate insulin-related hormone levels.
8. Protect Against Neurological Disease
Preclinical and clinical studies show that CBD has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers deduce these characteristics can provide significant neuroprotection, or protection against numerous pathological disorders.
Several preclinical studies suggest CBD can produce beneficial effects against Parkinsons disease, Alzheimers disease and multiple sclerosis. Huntingtons disease and cerebral ischemia were also tested, although significant positive results were not recorded. Further clinical studies are needed to confirm CBDs benefits when used as a treatment for these disorders.
9. Inhibit Arthritis Symptoms
Arthritis involves the deterioration of the tissues in and around your joints. There are several types of arthritis, and symptoms include pain, stiffness and loss of motion. Arthritis treatment usually targets pain relief and improved joint function.
A 2006 study found that Sativexa CBD-based botanical drug approved in the United Kingdom in 2010promoted statistically significant improvements in quality of sleep, pain during movement and pain at rest in patients with rheumatoid arthritis when compared to a placebo. It was the first controlled trial of Sativex as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, involving 58 patients. CBD was found to have a pain-relieving effect, as well as an ability to suppress disease activity.
In 2018, in a study of more localized treatment, researchers administered a synthetic CBD gel in either 250-milligram or 500-milligram doses daily or a placebo to patients with knee pain due to osteoarthritis. Patients also stopped taking any other anti-inflammatory medications or painkillers, with the exception of acetaminophen, before and during the study period.
The results were interesting, although not entirely conclusive. On one hand, those treated with CBD did not experience much change in pain when compared with placebo patients. On the other hand, there were statistically significant differences between the group receiving the 250-milligram dose and the placebo group when measuring the average weekly improvement of their worst pain levels and their WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index) physical function rating. Additionally, men seemed to benefit from CBD more significantly than women in this test.

This article provides an all-around guide for first-time buyers, highlighting the best products on the market. CBD, the non-intoxicating compound in Cannabis sativa, has been praised for its therapeutic properties, especially when applying a topical cream to ease pain and other types of aches. Some sportspeople consider CBD oils and topicals part of their daily health routine for improving performance, focus, and regeneration. While we still need more research to catch up with all the health benefits of CBD, it seems to offer promising results when it comes to relieving inflammation and soreness. However, not all CBD roll-on sticks are made equal. To help you make an educated decision, Ive prepared a buyers guide for beginners and my list of the best CBD roll-on sticks on the market. What Exactly Is a CBD Roll-on Stick? Image of CBD roll-on stick A CBD roll-on stick is a type of CBD topical that uses a convenient gel form to distribute CBD over the affected area. CBD roll-on sticks are easy to use, convenient, and easily pocketable, so you can use them independently of your situation whether youre in the office, at the gym, or riding a bike. Most CBD roll-on sticks are relatively potent, containing between 1000 mg and 3000 mg of CBD per stick; theyre usually infused with other pain-relieving ingredients, with menthol being the most common pick due to its analgesic and cooling properties. A significant advantage of a CBD roll-on stick over other topical products is its texture. Many topicals have either a grainy texture or greasy feel when you apply them to the skin. Roll-ons are relatively hassle-free; all you need to do is place it on the affected area and push the sticks head, spreading the CBD over your trouble spot. What Are the Benefits of CBD Roll-On for Athletes In a 2020 review of the benefits of CBD for athletes, the authors concluded that CBD may help reduce inflammation and pain, a much-desired effect for those looking for post-workout relief. The review highlighted CBDs ability to: Protect against gastrointestinal damage caused by inflammation Speed up regeneration after skeletal injuries Help ease stress and anxiety, which can enhance focus and boost athletic performance. However, the research team says more research is needed until we can come to definitive conclusions. Studies on animal models support CBDs anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities, while others also claim that CBD may offer significant help for people with chronic, non-cancer-related pain. The National Library of Medicine currently lists over 50 clinical trials testing CBD for different types of pain. General Benefits of Topical Forms of CBD Benefits of CBD in topical forms The therapeutic effects of CBD reach far beyond regular pains and aches. For example, at the American Academy of Dermatologys 2018 annual meeting, the members suggested the use of topical CBD for eczema, psoriasis, and other topical conditions such as acne. A 2020 research paper points to CBD cream as a possible source of relief from neuropathy, which is a type of pain caused by nerve damage. The authors attributed these effects to CBDs neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory benefits. Can You Fail a Drug Test while Using CBD Roll-On? CBD alone shouldnt show up on a drug test. Thats because drug tests arent looking for CBD. Instead, theyre focused on the metabolite of THC (THC-COOH). Theres a theoretical risk that youll have a false-positive result for THC if you take extremely high daily doses of full-spectrum CBD oil. However, the estimated dose is close to 2,000 mg, and most people dont exceed 50 mg of CBD daily in their supplementation. With topicals like CBD roll-on sticks, its yet another story. The CBD from topicals doesnt pass into the bloodstream. Instead, it interacts with CB2 receptors and TRPV1 receptors in the skins deeper layers. The only exception is transdermal products, but CBD roll-on sticks arent one of them. For complete peace of mind, you can choose a broad-spectrum or isolate-based product; none of them contain any THC. How I Chose the Best CBD Roll-On Sticks I always use strict criteria when choosing the best CBD products for my rankings. Theyre based on quality, transparency, and safety. Both products the Royal CBD Freeze Roll-on and High-strength Gold Bee Roll-on Stick have been tested for the following: Third-party lab reports from a content analysis performed by an ISO 17025-compliant lab. The source of hemp (U.S.-grown) THC content (no more than 0.3%, according to the 2018 Farm Bill) Purity (no pesticides, heavy metals, molds, and solvents) When I was scraping up my material for this guide, I also considered: The companys manufacturing techniques and certifications The potency of CBD Overall formula and whether the product contains additional supportive ingredients for pain relief. Finally, I took into account: Customer reviews Whether the company has ever received a warning letter from the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Whether the company is facing any lawsuits for selling mislabeled products or making unsupported health claims.
