Not the kind you think.
Hey there ,
Since the 50s, sunscreen companies have been telling us we need to be tan. Framing their products as a way to 'get tan without getting burned,' they literally mocked you if you werent. Dont be a paleface! exclaimed Coppertone (and, come on, the brand name is copper+tone).
Not only did they create and magnify a toxic beauty standard, but they probably bear more blame than the sun itself for rampant increases in skin cancer diagnoses. Take a look at the culprits:
Sunscreens of the past (then marketed as "suntan lotion") were designed to block UVB rays with none or negligible protection against UVA rays. And that BS gave sun-seekers a false sense of security.
Know this: When picking a sunscreen, you need to use Broad Spectrum (the good BS) sunscreens like Bask. That means it protects against UVA and UVB rays.
WHAT ARE UVA & UVB?
UVB Rays -These rays impact the topmost layer of skin (epidermis), and cause sunburn. Think UV "B" for 'Burning."
UVA Rays -These rays make up 95% of UV radiation. They are the longest wavelength and penetrate the deepest by reaching the dermis (or inner layer) where they cause genetic damage, immune suppression, and photoaging (wrinkling, blotching, etc.). Think UV "A" for "Aging."
UVA rays are whats used in indoor tanning beds. They are the rays that sunscreen companies ignored so that you could get tan without getting burned.' And they are now known to be the primary cause of melanoma - the deadliest form of skin cancer.
*There's a third type of UV ray called UVC. It's the strongest, but has the shortest wavelengths and is entirely absorbed by the Earths ozone layer.
Image: UVA rays are the deepest penetrating rays, causing genetic damage in the skin's inner layer.
DON'T FEEL PRESSURE TO BE TAN
We want to encourage you that contrary to what big sunscreen told you, it is, in fact, OK to be a paleface.
Please know that you dont need to be tan to look good or feel good. Your skin tone - no matter how dark or light it may be - is part of who you are.
But you only get one set of skin, so you ought to protect it. Preserve it. And most importantly, be comfortable in it.
One might say, Bask in it.
