Dear Friends:
LGBTQ++ Pride Month is underway (though at Syracuse Cultural Workers we celebratePRIDE all year round)!
Let us lift up the amazing culture, contributions and gains made by the LGBTQ+ movement over many decades of struggle. There is much to honor and support.
Unfortunately, the forces of reaction are digging in and seeking to role back important gains made so that ALL OF US can live as our true, open, outrageous selves. On the federal level, people can freely choose their gender identification on their passports and government officials support increased rights. And in some states, rights and recognition continue to grow. In other states, those controlled by Republicans, efforts to stigmatize trans youth are growing, books are being banned and the potential for even greater harm threatens.
As always, much depends on the people and our ability to organize and stand up proudly for liberation for all people.
Yours for Liberation,
Andy Mager
SCW Coordinator
Seventy years ago, the US Supreme Court ruled that segregated educational facilities are inherently unequal and violate the 14th Amendment. Significant progress was made in some communities to address this systemic racism in the aftermath of the Brown v. Board of Education decision. But there has also been backlash in many places and true equality of education remains a distant goal.
Just after Teacher's Appreciation Week is a good time to both support and appreciate educators of all stripes, but also to remember that government policies can either support and enable education for liberation or criminalize such initiatives (as is happening in some states).
Use our products to support educators and change policy!
