Hi Friend,
Te Tangi a te Tui,
a Mori cirque theatre epic,
opens this week!
"Words cannot do justice to the wonderful spectacles our circus whnau are creating. Something to look out for that I have never seen before is circus, contemporary movement, and haka [ceremonial Mori war dance] all meeting on stage in battle," says Director Tainui Tukiwaho in an interview with Stir.
Ma te huruhuru te manu ka rere.
Adorn the bird with feathers so it can fly.
Te Tangi a te Tui by Amber Curreen and Tainui Tukiwaho is a multigenerational story of loss, regeneration, and resilience told through soaring acrobatics, dance, and Te Reo Maori (the Maori language).
Commissioned and presented by Urban Ink Productions and The Cultch, this world premiere is a collaboration between two remarkable companies from Aotearoa (New Zealand): Te Rehia Theatre, a renowned Maori theatre company, and The Dust Palace, the contemporary circus company that brought you The WonderWombs and The Goblin Market.
