Imagine the frustration of a bad hair day, even at the salon. But fear not, as we have a captivating hair story for you.
This is a long one, but here it goes. I've been natural since Sept 2014 when I big chopped. I naturally had a two for most of the first couple of years. It was cute and healthy looking. When it grew out some, I would get crochet braids and wear those for about 6- 8 weeks. Things were fine. Where I was fed up when I decided to get a sew-in weave in February of 2018, I went to a pretty well know black salon in my area (I was a first-time client there) and was excited to get a full sew-in again as a protective style. I have had a couple before, and it was great because I had access to my scalp to receive moisture, oil, cleanser, and conditioner every two weeks. When the hairdresser started on my hair, she attached a wig stocking cap (not the net kind, but solid) over my cornrows. I began to get suspicious but was shy and didn't speak upa big mistake. Of course, she had the chair facing away from the mirror, AND I'm extremely nearsighted, and my glasses were off, but I digress. Anyway, she SEWED the wig cap to my cornrows and then sewed the wefts to the wig cap. I should've gotten up and asked for my money back, but the resulting style was charming and looked natural. Little did I know that denying my scalp access to moisture, oil, and nutrients for that long would be detrimental to my hair health. I naively thought my hair might still grow and flourish under the weave just because I was not styling it.Additionally, later that year, I was diagnosed with a health condition and was sick during that whole time. My body was getting very few nutrients from what little food I did eat, and I couldn't stomach the taste of water. I learned the hard way that one's overall health and nutrition affect hair health. I wore the weave for about six weeks or a little longer to get my money's worth. When I returned to have the weave taken down, my hair was extremely brittle, thin, and sparse. My hair hadn't seen that level of damage since my relaxer days. But it got worse...Instead of getting my tail out of the chair immediately and going home to nurse my hair back to health my way, I let the stylist shampoo and silk press the three struggle strands left on my head. It was a disaster. She didn't even condition me. She just washed it with shampoo, blow-dried (harshly and using a fine toothcomb- nothing about this experience was gentle), and then fried it to a crisp to straighten it.Since then, I have sworn off all stylists. Many in my area don't care about hair health, just how the result looks. I have done a lot of youtube research and invested in tools to do it myself now (essential maintenance- I can't install weaves, etc.). I have one trusted stylist that I go to her house and get my crochet installed. But even she is on probation because she did an install for me in Feb 2020 and braided me so tight I had to rub warm water and oil onto my scalp each night for two weeks to soothe the intense pain. I wanted to cry from the pain; it was that bad. I removed about 5-6 braids that were pulled way too tight. I had all of those traction alopecia bumps along my hairline. Ugh.Right now, I'm just babying my hair and wearing wigs until the end of the summer. My hair is thriving now. Thank God. Lol
