The Angry One! Thats what I lovingly call my wife before shes had her coffee.
Jokes aside, angry is the last thing youll be after tasting this one. With TWO 94-point ratings?! And a jaw-dropping near 70% OFF!? $85 at the winery and $27 from us. BOOM.
Thats a recipe for merriment and mirth, right?
That is, assuming you like your Pinot Morgado-esque: big, brash, fruit-driven, laden with spice, toasty oak, and full-bodied power.
Without further hype and hyperbole, were pumped to bring you another huge first on Wine Spies - Three Furies! This Central Coast producer has been flying high in elite, small circles of wine society and today were breaking the doors wide open to share it with you at an astounding price.
Their winemaking mission is clear - go big or go home: These wines represent contemplative studies of place, from vineyards sought for their character, where grapes struggle to grow from dry, cracked earth, and where vines are buffeted by screeching maritime gales. From this harrowed fruit, we make seductive, delicious wines. It all sounds a bit dramatic, but the wines reflect this sentiment quite well.
And it helps to have a consummate professional at the winemaking helm. Martin Mackenzie, a New Zealand native, crafted wines for the world-renowned Stonyridge Vineyard on remote Waiheke Island for a good decade before moving to California. Oh, and he also makes the wines for Neal Family up on Howell Mountain!
As the name suggests, its a bigger style Pinot. One for the Cab lovers, you might say. Bursting at the seams with smoked meats, Haribo cherry cola gummies, rhubarb crisp, loads of cardamom, and clove. Maybe a touch of mesquite wood, or beef jerky? Its dark, concentrated, and brawny for sure, and all those flavors come amplified with plenty of oak, tannin, and acidity.
This is a single vineyard mind you, 100% from Tondr Grapefield smack in the heart of the same appellation that boasts famous sites such as Pisoni, Garys and Rosellas. As far as Pinot deals go, they dont get much better than this. However, with very little made, we have far less to go around so fair warning - this has a few hours at most before inventory crashes to the earths core.
94 Points The Wine Independent
Medium ruby-purple in color, the 2019 The Angry One Pinot Noir comes barreling out with bold notes of black cherries, boysenberries, and dark chocolate plus nuances of unsmoked cigars, tree bark, and forest floor. The medium to full-bodied palate is jam-packed with ripe black fruits framed by lightly chewy tannins and a lively line, finishing long and fragrant. Drink 2024-2030.
94 Points PinotFile
Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Reticent but pleasant aromas of dark cherry, rose petal, and worn leather. An initial hint of volatile acidity quickly dissipates. Very accommodating on the palate with a range of vivid flavors including black cherry, blackberry, spice and cola. The wine sports a silky texture, polished tannins and an inkling of oak. The finish lingers with bold, aromatic goodness. Terrific when tasted the following day from a previously opened bottle.
