Tim, imagine youre shopping for cat food...
You see one regular bag, and one marked premium.
Which do you think is better for your cat?
The answer might surprise you, because
Truth is, the word premium doesnt mean much.1
You see, in the cat community there are NO requirements for a food to be marked premium.
In fact, some of those premium cat food manufacturers may even be using shortcuts to mass produce and preserve their food.
And those shortcuts could be costing your pet their good bill of health...
By causing things like inflammation, kidney problems, obesity, joint discomfort, and even cancer in your pet.1,2
All while you thought you were making the best decision possible for your furry friend.
Its not fair and honestly, its a little scary.
Thats why I want to talk to you about 3 things you should look out for on any cat food label...
Because nutrition is one of the most important aspects of your cats health and finding a healthy food isnt always straightforward.
Thats why Im here so you can feel confident that youre giving your cat only the best.
So, take a couple of minutes out of your day and check your cats food label for any of these pet threats:
Pet Threat #1: Check the protein.
Your cat deserves the best of the best yet some cat food companies are cutting corners with their protein.
One of the ways to spot these low-quality proteins is by looking for the word by-product.
Now, you probably see the word chicken by-product on cat food labels all the time
And since it contains the word chicken, its easy to assume that its healthy.
But unfortunately, thats not true.
Chicken by-product is actually the waste generated from chicken processing plants
Like heads, legs, bones, internal organs, and feathers. (Yuck!)
You wouldnt eat that and you surely dont want your kitty to eat it, either.
So, what can you do?
Look for a nutritional adequacy statement, which guarantees the food meets basic nutritional standards.
Just check for these words on the label:
(name of brand) is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles.
That means the Association of American Feed Control Officials has inspected and approved that cat food
And you can be sure your cats food is as nutritious as it says.
Then, you have to make sure theres enough of that protein in your cats food.
Pet Threat #2: With chicken
This is one that is easy to overlook but its so important.
Now, if you see a bag that says with chicken, you might think its mostly chicken
But the truth is: By FDA standards, the word with means the food is only required to have 3% of that ingredient.
Unfair? You bet it is. And many pet food manufacturers are doing just that
So its up to you to outsmart them.
Look for food labels that say [protein source] food or [protein source] for cats.
For instance, youd see a bag labeled chicken cat food or chicken for cats.
This is instead of the
That tiny change of words makes all the difference, because those words mean that the FDA regulates that food
And it means the food contains 95% of chicken much better than 3% which is what your kitty deserves.
Finally, make sure your kitty isnt getting overloaded with fillers.
Pet Threat #3: Corn and Rice
Many cat food companies use corn and rice as fillers in their food
So they can save money at your cats expense.
See, your kitty is programmed to eat meat, not carbohydrates.
So their body isnt built to process that much sugar.
In fact, processed foods that are heavy in carbs might even contribute to unhealthy weight gain, joint pain, or even diabetes in your cat.
Thats not good news.
Instead, look for ingredient labels that have chicken, beef, salmon, or a protein source near the top of the ingredients list
Since the first ingredients listed are the ones that make up most of the food.
On the other hand, if rice or corn are some of the first ingredients on the list, leave that bag on the shelf theres a better choice out there.
Now, you have all the information you need to spot the most nutritious cat food in the store
Which can make all the difference for your cats health especially in the long-run.
Ill be sure to send you more crucial health tips like these in the future
And together, we can help your cat live the longest, healthiest life possible.
To your happy, healthy cat,
Dr. Gary Richter
P.S. If you read this email and realized youre not satisfied with your cats food, you may want to make a change.
(Good for you for taking a step towards better health for your pet!)
But when it comes to changing their food, its important to transition them slowly so their bodies dont get shocked.
So, mix a little of the new food with the old food, and make the mixture a little more of the new food each day
After 5 days, your cat should be ready to eat 100% of their new food.
And theyll be on their way to a healthier, happier life after that! (And youll have some peace of mind, too.)
