Ideally, every school would have "L" hurdles like the VS Gold Medal. Also called 90 degree hurdles, these are heavier and more durable, but are also more expensive. However, there are two important plus-sides: L shaped hurdles have appropriate pull-over weighting and are potentially safer.

Pull-over resistance is the force it takes to knock the hurdle down. While rocker hurdles are allowed by NFHS rules, having consistency at every meet every time a hurdler impacts a hurdle board can reduce an adverse reaction to a 'soft' board. So regardless of brand, if every hurdle reacted the same way every time a hurdler made contact, that would allow the hurdler to better react to the counter forces.

Second, when rocker hurdles are hit they tend to move. They hit the track surface with so much force that they often bounce... and don't stay in their original lane. So if the lead runner sends a hurdle flying, that can be disastrous for the rest of the hurdlers... and quite dangerous.

But not every school has the budget for L hurdles, and if a rocker hurdle is the right choice for a school, it's good to know that the VS Rocker is the best hurdle on the market. The double tubed base is WELDED. There are other rocker style hurdles on the market that also have double tube bases but they are held together by bolts... which means maintenance and, eventually, missing parts.

The VS Gold Medal hurdle is extremely durable. With corrugated aluminum square tubing with professional hand-crafted welding throughout, they are as strong as any hurdle out there.
