General Mariano Vallejo (1807-1890)

Immersed in the turbulent currents of his time, General Mariano Vallejo's journey reflects the complex tapestry of California's past. Born into a prominent Mexican family, he embraced democratic ideals and supported his brother's rebellion against Mexican rule. From quelling Indian uprisings to defying ecclesiastical censorship, Vallejo's life was marked by defiance and determination. His passion for viticulture blossomed during his tenure at the Sonoma mission, where he cultivated vast vineyardspioneering commercial grape growing in California. Despite enduring imprisonment and loss, Vallejo's indomitable spirit led him to serve in the California State Senate and pursue his winemaking dreams until thwarted by the phylloxera crisis.

George C. Yount (1794-1865)

George C. Yount's odyssey epitomizes the spirit of adventure and adaptation. A veteran of the War of 1812, Yount's exploits ranged from trapping sea otters to forging friendships with California's elite. Gifted the Rancho Caymus land grant by General Vallejo, Yount laid the foundations for Napa Valley's vinicultural legacy, planting its inaugural vines in 1839. His name now graces the town of Yountvillea testament to his enduring legacy.

Agoston Haraszthy (1812-1869)

Agoston Haraszthy's saga reads like a tale of daring and ambition. From his Hungarian origins to his exploits across Europe and America, Haraszthy's life was a whirlwind of enterprise and adventure. Establishing Buena Vista Winery, California's first stone winery, Haraszthy left an indelible mark on the viticultural landscape. Charles Krug (1825-1892)
