Brunello 2016: Vintages Simply Dont Get Better
The 2016 vintage was one of Brunellos best ever: Wine Advocate awarded it 98 points, while Wine Spectator rated it a 99, their best score ever.
Those raves sparked a collector feeding frenzyand by and large, that run is over. Its no surprise that excellent 2016 bottles, which Vinous described as well-muscled black stallions in their prime, are few and far between on the retail market right now.
But few does not mean nonexistentand weve got a spectacular gem for you in the 2016 Casisano Brunello di Montalcino. Boasting 94 points from James Suckling, the same score as heavyweights like 2016 Canalicchio di Sopra ($121) and even the mythical 2016 Poggio di Sotto ($261), its the kind of under-$50 bargain you rarely see from Brunellos 16 vintage.
Weve got it for Wine Access members at 38% offjust $39, the lowest price in the US, down to $36 when you buy six. Vintages simply dont get better than this in Montalcino, and neither does price-to-quality ratio.

Surrounded by hundred-year old forests and overlooking the famed SantAntimo valley, this small winery is crafting delicious, ripe Brunellos with flair and finesse, in the words of Brunello expert Kerin OKeefe. The vineyards here are at high altitude and enjoy perfect southwest exposure. The wines are raised for three years in neutral Slavonian botti, then given a six-month rest in bottle.
In 2016, the Tommasi family had a dream vintage to work with: Spring rainfall in Montalcino and a warm, dry summer made for a near-perfect growing season. Stark diurnal temperature shifts kept a balance between fruit and acid, allowing the late-maturing Sangiovese to ripen slowly, making each grape a gold mine. Casisano completed their harvest in a leisurely way by mid-Octoberits precisely what every winemaker hopes for.
Casisano has a reputation as a Brunello that drinks beautifully on release, but also ages for years. Vinous said this wine is full of potential, and Jeb Dunnuck concurred that it will certainly develop favorably. One smell of this wines beautiful cherry and cranberry fruitand one glimpse at neighbors like Podere le Ripi and Ciacci Piccolominiand you could make the case that this wine is one of the biggest bargains of this remarkable vintage!
Wine Access Tasting Note
Medium ruby color with a cherry core. Red fruit dominates the nose, with a mix of raspberry jam, dried cranberry, and fresh cherry, all mixed with soft florals, dried herbs, and tomato leaf. Plums and red apple skins punch through on the palate, which is delightfully soft and rounded with polished tannins and a lengthy finish of mint, tobacco, and spice. A Brunello that expresses the vintage, ready to drink today. Drink now2030.
