World-Class Mt. Veeder Cabernet
Hello
Wine Access
Dear Insider,Whenever I see a Mount Veeder Cabernet on a wine list or on a shelf, I feel a rush of excitement.Thats because I think of Mount Veeder as the perfect Napa Valley appellation. Its Cabernets showcase the power of mountain fruit, but with softness and drinkability. Huckleberries, blackberries, and bay leaves are all woven together in a firmly structuredyet altogether harmoniouspackage. But Mount Veeder Cabernets dont come cheap. OShaughnessys most prized single-vineyard wine is $150. The mythical Mayacamas Vineyards Cab goes for around $180. Alfred Tesserons Pym-Rae fetches $380, and Lokoya sells for $500 these days.So when I tasted the 2019 Fontanella Family Cabernet Sauvignon, and its mulberry and blackberry fruit and floral perfume came into focus, I felt that familiar exhilaration. Surely for a Mt. Veeder Cabone this gorgeous and immediately engagingI was looking at well over $100.Try $85, said our VP of Wine, Eduardo Dingler. And I think I can do better than that.He wasnt kidding. For just $47, and $45 on cases, you get a lush Mount Veeder Cabernet from an incredible vintageone that is worth every penny of its $85 winery price. For any Napa Cabernet loverespecially if youre a fan of the great Robert Craig wines or any of the other superstars of Mount Veederyouve just found an ironclad case-buy that will easily age another decade. Its simply phenomenal.Claim Your Share Now.Mount Veeder isnt packed with vineyards, but the vineyards that are there are first-rate. Thats thanks to the goldilocks terroir of this stretch of the Mayacamas range: lots of high-altitude southeast-facing hillsides ringed by forest, well-draining gravelly loams, and the cooling influence of the bay. Cabernet sets small bunches of tiny berries here, giving wines of explosively floral, red-fruited, and long-lived wines.Great wine is a kind of foregone conclusion here. Thats why when he was just 29, Opus One alum Jeff Fontanella and his wife Karen chose a site on Partrick Road, on the southeast side of the mountain, to start their own vineyard and winery. This project has been their dream and lifes work for the last 18 years, and it shows in the polish, concentration, and purity of this wine. This is an utterly seductive bottle of Cabernet, at any price. But rarely does Napa Valley Cabernet of this qualitylet alone a single-vineyard Mount Veeder winecross our tasting table for less than fifty dollars. Thats why Ill be laying in a six-pack, and I strongly encourage you to do the same.
