But very few wineries in Napa have been around for 40 years.
Clos Pegase was able to buy their three primo vineyards long before Napas modern gold rush, giving them the ability to deliver high-quality, estate-grown Cabernet for significantly less than their peers. In 2021, they had a stunning vintage to work witha year that will challenge the best of the century thus faras well as the most talented winemaker in their history: Robin Akhurst.
Robin got his start working for the legendary Domaine Leflaive in Burgundy and Two Hands in Australias Barossa Valley, before a connection led him to a coveted position working under Thomas Rivers Brown. From there, he spent four years running a custom-crush project for Nils Venge, the Napa legend dubbed The King of Cabernetand the first person in California to earn a perfect score from Robert Parker.
Akhurst was able to harness the stunning 2021 vintage to produce a bold bottle thats packed with macerated blackberries and dried cherries and accented with beautiful cocoa and espresso flavors, courtesy of a luxurious 19-month stay in 35% new French oak. Dark midnight-purple, with ruby edges. Macerated blackberry, dried cherries, cocoa powder, roasted espresso beans, fresh tobacco, and cassis on the nose. The palate brings forth huckleberry jam, spiced chai, Madagascar vanilla, and sage. Persistent flavor is delivered in a full body, with long, elegant tannins and juicy acidity.
