Lange Estates collectible from one of Oregons best vintages of all time
Hello
WineAccess
Dear Insider,On the last day of July, I sat with Pinot superstar Jesse Lange on the deck overlooking his familys newest vineyard, in Monmouth, Oregon. We sipped the 2021 Lange Estate Yamhill-Carlton Assemblage Pinot Noirthe main reason for the visit, and a wine well worth the drive from my home in Eugene.Grown on three top Yamhill-Carlton sites in a phenomenal Willamette Valley vintageone that featured what Jesse says was the most flawless September and October hes ever seenthe 2021 Yamhill Assemblage is exactly what a young Willamette Valley Pinot from a phenomenal season should be. It shows a shining dark ruby color, with aromas of cherry fruit, spice box, and cedar, plus a layered, herby palate and sturdy tannins that offer fantastic structure.Jesse also brought along a bottle of the 2008 Yamhill Assemblage, and tasting that left me with no doubt that wed made the right decision in claiming a healthy allocation of the 21. After a decade and a half, the 08 is awash in baked strawberry, book leather, cedar, and turned earth. Its an infinitely complex and maturing Pinot that still has beautiful bonesand it shows exactly where this 21 is headed.Weve offered Pinot at all price points from Lange, but its rare that we get a shot at their top-of-the-line bottling, especially below the winery price. At a time when the NY Times Magazine is doing fawning profiles of Willamette Valley vintners and top bottlings are topping $150, this is a spectacular bargaina flagship Pinot to enjoy now or watch evolve for years and years. Its just $69, or $65 per bottle when you buy six.Click here to claim yours, and get and extra 10% off at checkout. It was over a decade ago, well before my time at Wine Access, when one of our emails described Jesse Lange as looking like he could burn up the Boston Marathon course in two and a half hours. Ill say this: Jesse might be a father of two now, but you could still strike a match on himin fact, when I saw him, he was fresh off running the Fueled by Fine Wine Half Marathon, which winds its way through the Dundee Hills vineyards.Lange Estate is one of the seminal wineries in Dundee. Jesses father Don founded the estate and laid the foundation, but it was Jesse who struck the first partnership with Wine Accessand pushed the estate to the level of decorated Willamette wineries like Bergstrm, Domaine Serene, and Cristom, earning them aFood & Winemagazine Oregon Winery of the Year title in the process.Jesse and the team go a bit outside of their Dundee wheelhouse for their Yamhill-Carlton Assemblage. Theyve classically tapped the Hirschy and Yamhill Vineyards for this bottling, but in 2021, they leaned on a third site: the Lazy River Vineyard, to tell the tale of one of their favorite sub-AVAs.Yamhill-Carlton is built on Willakenzie, Jesse told us as he poured, referring to the sedimentary soil type that dominates the area. But Lazy River is one of the only vineyards thats primarily volcanic. Adding a new vineyard to the mix was a bold move, and when I asked him what the new site brought to the table, his answer was immediate: Structure. That is one thing that this wine has in spades: in addition to the vibrant backbone of aciditythe electric current, as Jesse calls itthis wine is built on beautiful and stout tannins that will see it well into the future. In fact, the night of my visit, some friends and I sipped the young Yamhill and its mature counterpart, looking forward to the day when we could enjoy the 2021 with some age on it.I recommend you put away a few bottles and partake in that pleasure with us.
