What separates rziger Wrzgarten from the standard slate-dominated vineyards of the Mosel goes far beyond aesthetics, and became obvious as we walked the vines (stepping carefully so we didnt slide off the hillside). The soil is crumbly and iron-richa ruddy red underfootand the wines it produces show beautiful exotic fruit and rounded texture in their youth, and sweet baking spices when they are mature. Though, ironically, the site's name spice garden comes from the middle ages and refers to a literal herb garden.
This Alte Reben Kabinett comes from the winerys oldest vines in the prime parts of the WrzgartenUrglck, Welbersberg, and the original core Wrzgarten itself. These are names that dont appear on labels anymore but were codified in old, pre-industrial Prussian tax charts as the best parts of the vineyard, equivalent to Burgundys Grand Cru lieu-dits. The vines themselves are ungrafted and were planted a century or more ago, with the oldest vines crossing 120 years in age.
Dr. Hermann is a centuries-old producer known for working with the top vineyard sites in Mosel, and today is led by upstart winemaker Christian Hermann, whose Riesling qualifications are not just inherited: Before taking charge of his familys operation, he spent time working with the most renowned names in the region: Dr. Loosen, J.J. Prum, and even cult producer Willi Schaefer.
"I have been waiting for this vintage for 20 years, that I also have a Saar acid in my life," winemaker Christian Hermann told Wine Advocate. Hes referring to the searing acid usually seen in the colder, neighboring region of the Saar. Its why the mouthfeel here is so long, pointed, and agile, with bright tension balancing out the wines delicate, Kabinett-level sweetness nicely.

This is by no means a delicate Mosel Kabinett Riesling: It has high impact and offers an assertive display of ripe peach, tangerine, green apple, lime peel, crushed rock, and spicy ginger. The wine is brisk, purposeful, and agile in its movements, and it puts the spice from rziger Wrzgarten (literally Spice Garden) on full display.
