Perfectly Mature, from an All-Time-Great Vintage
Wine Spectator called the 2010 Rioja harvest the best in 50 years. Wine Advocate has never rated a Rioja vintage higher. All that buzz spawned a buying frenzy, and now perfectly preserved, winery-direct 2010 Reservas are extremely difficult to findat any price.
Our Master Sommelier Sur Lucero just returned from Spain, where he scored an unbelievable library value from that outstanding season: a Rioja Reserva that shows the power of the vintage and the magic that occurs with nearly fifteen years of cellar age.
Grown on 65-year-old vines, hand-harvested and sorted, this is savory and earthy, showing lively fruit and layers of complexity. Its every ounce a $40 bottle of wine, and weve got it for 50% off that. You wont find it anywhere else.

We first discovered the wines of Bodegas Escudero almost 20 years ago at a Guia Penin tasting in New York, and this bottle shows why weve been fans ever since. Showing a dusty ruby color in the glass, the wine takes you down a path full of savory and earthy aromas: dried cranberry, roasted rosemary, cigar leather, aged soy, and turned earth. The palate has soft tannins, effortless acidity, and moderate weight, plus lively flavors of dark cherry, black tea, dried orange peel, toasted spice, and smoked meat. Its a gorgeous example of how the earthy nuances and mature, quiet power of aged Rioja can capture and keep your attention.
Bodegas Escudero dates back more than a century, to when Juan Escudero first started making wine in a small mountainside cave. The winery gained momentum when Juans grandson Benito, inspired by his father and grandfather, dove into the family business. He studied at the Requena School of Oenology and later at the Villafranca del Peneds School of Oenology. He even traveled to Bordeaux and Champagne to deepen his knowledge.
The spirit of Benito is alive in the current Bodegas Escudero wines, which are sourced from the familys holdings in La Rioja and Navarravineyards whose vines average 70 years of age. Most are planted in poor, stony soils on the southern slopes of Monte Yerga, where the extreme climate and diurnal temperature swing create Tempranillo of beautiful ripeness and verve.
Serna Solar de Becquer hails from the Cuesta la Reina estate, located on a sun-drenched hillside. Hand-harvested and selected in the vineyard, it was fermented in stainless steel tanks on indigenous yeasts before spending at least 18 months in aged American oak, during which it was racked three times.
Although the oak aging is crucial, its only part of the story of this exceptional bottle, which has been resting in the winery cellars since the all-time great 2010 vintage. Now blossoming fully, its a prime example of why we think vintage Rioja is one of the most precious wine experiences availableand undoubtedly one of the best you can get for a price like this.
*We recommend using an Ah-So wine opener to enjoy this bottling, as aged corks are delicate and may crumble or break easily.
