Over the course of the last four decades, Silverado has quietly acquired one of the most impressive collections of vineyards in Napaand todays wine welds together some of their most coveted estate-grown parcels for an outrageous deal in California Cabernet.

Todays 2018 Block Blend features fruit from their legendary Stags Leap vineyard married to the Cabernet from the legendary Oakville Station vineyardpart of which borders To Kalonin the heart of Oakville. Rocky, volcanic-soil Blocks M and T in their Mt. George estate vineyard in Coombsville complete the blend, which was grown in Wine Spectators favorite Napa vintage in a generation.

In California, your status as an iconic winery is confirmed when UC Davis names a heritage clone after you. It means the vines on your property are so unique and important to the history of California wine that they deserve to be preserved and propagated for future generations.

Only three Cabernet vineyards in the entire state have been important enough to merit that kind of preservationand the Disney-Silverado Heritage Clone is the only one from Stags Leap. Its affectionately known as Sees Clone in reference to Harry See, the candy magnate who originally planted Silverados Stags Leap vineyard in 1968. Diane Miller, Walt Disneys daughter, and her husband Ron purchased the site in 1981, and theyve quietly added to that crown jewel to create one of the most impressive collections of vineyards in southern Napa.

In addition to the rolling hills around their winery in Stags Leapwhich are the source for their $190 SOLO bottlingthe 2018 Block Blend draws from Blocks M and T in their Mt. George estate vineyard in Coombsville. That vineyard was originally planted in 1868, and Napa pioneer Henry Hagens stone gate still sits at the entrance to the site.

Silverado saw the potential for the Coombsville long before names like Palmaz, Meteor, and Realms Farella bottling made the AVA one of the hottest in Napathey acquired Mt. George in the late 80s, back before most wine-lovers had even heard of the area. Its soils are based on volcanic ash, covered by alluvium and cobblestone-studded loam, while the cool air off San Pablo Bay helps regulate heat in the summercreating a long growing season that ripens Cabernet to powerful perfection.

To that, they add grapes from Oakville Station, UC Davis 40 acre research vineyard that sits on some of the most coveted dirt in the entirety of Napa. Its a lineup of sites that would impress the Steel Curtain with power and complexityand its beyond rare to find this level of raw materials at this price. In the glass, a deep red ruby core shows a nice sheen. The aromas are led by a bounty of dark fruit, with lilac, violet, plum, blackberry, plus hints of tobacco and graphite. The palate is rich and muscular, with plenty of fruit in the core rounded by baking spice, lively acidity, and lush tannins that resolve in a long-lasting finish. Drink now2030.
