Wine Spectator Top-10 Value of the Year
When it comes to value, Saint Cosmes Ctes-du-Rhne deserves its own tier.
Thats why Wine Spectator just named todays 2022 in their Top 10 Values of 2023and why its BY FAR our top seller in that category over the last five years.
Vinous calls the historic Saint Cosme estate elite, while Rhne expert Jeb Dunnuck says its unquestionably one of the reference point estates in the southern Rhne Valley. Wine Advocate has put two of their wines at the 100-point pinnacle and three bottles have made it onto Wine Spectators Top 100 list.
The 2022, born in a hot and dry vintage that pumped some it up with extra juiciness and body, is a saturated purple-black color, and bursting with ripe fruit, spices, and fantastic energy. Its been nearly two years since we last offered this stellar wine, which our members call impressive and one of the best Rhnes made. Remarkable for a bottle at this price point.

I dont design this wine for cellaring, wrote Saint Cosmes Louis Barruol about the 2022 Ctes-du-Rhne. But it just so happens that it matures very well. Recent blind tastings of our 2008s, 2009s, and 2010s were more reminiscent of a Saint Joseph than a Ctes du Rhne.
That speaks to the quality of this wine, and the 2022 fulfills the concentration and richness its 100%-Syrah composition promises, warming the room with bramble fruits, accented by cracked pepper, interwoven with notes of wildflowers, licorice, and lavender. Take a sip and let the plush palates spicy fruit and buoyant energy usher you toward the long, polished finish.
Louis Barruol is the 14th-generation winemaker at Saint Cosme, and his bone-deep sense of terroir shows. Wine Spectator has hailed him as The Genius of Gigondas, and his single-vineyard bottles often cost well over $100, but his Ctes-du-Rhnea masterclass in Syrahalso shows the magic his deft hand can work.
A studious renaissance man, Barruol is an expert on almost everything: history, geology, chemistry, politics, rugby, and music. When hes not making wine, hes practicing his cello or playing on a local rugby squad, but he still found time to convert his estate to biodynamics in 2010, taking centuries of accumulated vineyard expertise to its apex.
This is a bargain superstar year in and year out, and our members always jump at the chance to stock up on it. Take one sip and youll see why.
Wine Access Tasting Note
Saturated, inky purple-black color at the center, with a bright ruby-pink rim. The nose is full of bramble fruits, such as smashed blackberry, blueberry, and loganberry, while the backdrop offers wild violets, cracked pepper, and a touch of licorice. Ripe and juicy on the palate, with plenty of spices showing through. Its broad yet energetic, and the finish is polished and detailed. Just delicious. Drink now2029.
