My Favorite Under-$30 Gran Reserva of the Year

Dear Insider,The 2014 Bodegas Tobi Oscar Tobi is my favorite under-$30 Rioja Gran Reserva I have tasted this year, and its not even close.A Gran Reserva grown on 34- to 93-year old vines in Rioja Alta, made from free-run juice, now with NINE years of age should cost $50-$60and up. Thats because using only free-run juice yields much less wineand when Rioja estates do it, they often make up for it by raising prices. Based on the sheer number of Rioja-loving members reading this, I know this wine is going to vanish. At 55% off on bottle one, and an incredible 62% off on a case, this is my Rioja Gran Reserva buy of the year. In Europe, this wine sells for up to $60, but thanks to my relationship with the importer, weve got the US exclusive for $29, down to $25 per bottle on cases.Click here to claim your share.Free-run wine, obtained at the end of fermentation without pressing the grapes, is considered the highest-quality portion of the juice, with excellent freshness and clarity of flavor. From that pristine starting point, Bodegas Tobi made 60 barrels of this beautifully integrated Gran Reserva, boasting the depth and spicy nuances that can only come from almost a decade in the cellar.Perfectly-aged Gran Reservas of this caliber rarely come for $29 because of how expensive and time-consuming it is to make them. Theres the cost of aging this wine for two years in high-quality French and Hungarian oak, and 15 more months in bottle. And we still havent gotten to the five additional years of aging this wine received in the estates cool cellars, developing layers of spice and complexity.All that adds up to an elegant and perfectly polished wine, full of dark cherries, strawberry, blackcurrants, and sagebrush. The backdrop offers resinous herbs, licorice, citrus peels and warm dusty earth. Its rich and full in body, with a plush texture and fully integrated tannins that still have a soft, supple grip around the edges. Its complex and subtle, a wine to contemplate in silence or pour for guests alongside paella.After almost a decade of age, this stellar wine has its breed on full display, and still has another ten years or more in the tank. I challenge you to find another Rioja Gran Reserva at this level for as little as $25. It simply wont happen.
