One of the Top White Burgundy Values In...?

Were not sure we know a more over-performing Burgundy estate than Prosper Maufoux.

Helmed by the legendary Nadine Gublin, the first woman to win the coveted Winemaker of the Year title from La Revue du Vin de France, theyve turned out a string of incredible red Burgundy values that have thrilled our membersand have a fleet of four- and five-star reviews to back it up.

Our first introduction to the Prosper Maufoux came at a glitzy high-rise affair in Dallas, where a big-name art collector was pouring a few rarities from her storied wine cellar. On the table were more Insta-worthy labels than we could count, including a 1999 Domaine Armand Rousseau and a 2001 Clos Vougeot. Yet it was a seductive number from Prosper Maufoux, poured freely throughout the night, that triggered our dealmaking instincts.

Weve been conducting the Maufoux hype-train ever since, but this 2022 Bourgogne Chardonnay is something else. Prosper Maufoux was founded in 1860 in the white-wine haven of St.-Aubin, and the intervening generations have allowed them to develop connections to some of the bestand most under-the-radarChardonnay terroirs in Burgundy.

For this bottling, they head south of the Cte dOr to the Cte Chalonnaise and the Mconnaistwo of our favorite spots to look for value in the entire region. Wines from those locales tend to be more delicious and approachable young than some of their cousins from closer to Beaune, and that drink-now charm is on full display here.

The 2022 vintage produced the sort of vibrant, minerally wines that caused us to fall in love with Burgundy in the first place. Winemaker Nadine Gublin took the hand-harvested grapes and pressed them as whole bunches for maximally pure flavors, before fermentation and aging entirely in stainless steel tanks. Its an absolute winnerthe kind of under-$25 wine that youll be happy to pour with a spruced up Saturday meal but can afford to pop on a Tuesday.

A lively golden-tinged core in the glass. The aromas are led by a bounty of crushed limestone, Amalfi lemon peel, and chamomile. The palate is dominated by a fresh stone-fruit note that is lifted by crisp acidity and a kiss of salinity leading to a long-lasting finish. A vibrant, evocative, and focused Bourgogne.
