Wine Access
Our best-selling Barolo of the last two years
2018 Casalcomignoli by Carlin de Paolo Barolo Piedmont
No other Barolo weve offered has come close to touching the popularity of Carlin de Paolos Casalcomignolinot in total sales, not in the sheer number of five-star reviews. Our first two vintages disappeared in a flash, and once we tallied the numbers, it was head-and-shoulders our bestselling Barolo each of the last two years.
The 2018 Casalcomignoli had some big shoes to filland it sauntered in and blew us away. The product of a small fourth-generation winery in one of our favorite drink-young Barolo vintagesone that Forbes praised as an excellent yearthis is a serious wine, so dont let our best-in-the-nation price fool you.
Inexpensive Barolo barely exists, and finding this level of quality at this price is unreal. We grabbed as much as we could for Wine Access members, but be warned: Its not going to be enough to satisfy demand.

Barolo Like This Rarely Comes for This Price
Barolo is known for its all-consuming aromatics, and this one bursts with aromas of cherries, flower petals, black tea, and hints of tobaccomixed together, they seem to slow down time. The muscular palate shows off complex fruit along with the regions signature tannins, which are grippy but finely detailed. It all leads to a long finish that demands another sip.
This is Nebbiolo in all its modern glory, planted in the dramatic hills around Cuneo. The four brothers behind the wineGiancarlo, Davide, Lorenzo, and Paoloare constantly fusing traditional methods in the vineyard with modern techniques in the cellar.
A gentle maceration followed by a stay in large French oak tonneaux to add polish makes for a bottle thats delicious now after a decant. It will start peaking in the next five yearstheres no need to let it sleep for two decades, as is the case with many of its peers. Were all stocking up for the near- and mid-term, and anyone who loves Italian wine ought to as well.
Wine Access Tasting Note
Medium ruby-crimson center, with shades of garnet toward the rim. Ripe dark cherry, red plum, red currant, and tan tobacco aromas fill the glass. Red flowers, fresh and dried, lurk in the periphery, along with smoked herbs, old leather, and black tea. Medium-plus in weight, with broad tannins and good depth and volume. Drinking well with about 6090 minutes in a decanter, and will be even better with a couple more years in the bottle. Drink 20252037.
