Today, weve got the very first officially organic vintage of their bone-dry, mineral-laden ros. Grown on an estate just down the road from where Chteau dEsclans makes their famous Whispering Angel and $100 Garrus, this is the quintessential French ros. Its fragrant, juicy, fresh, and crispa gorgeous representation of the worlds most iconic ros region.
Even as many Provenal estates have ballooned their production to meet skyrocketing demand for ros, Demoiselles has remained committed to strict standards of quality, even if it means stateside scarcity. That attention shows in their 2022, which entices from the start with exquisite aromas of lavender, honeydew melons, red raspberries, rose petals, acacia, and strawberries.
Demoiselles once belonged to the royal family of Monaco, and when we went to see it two years ago we marveled at the rows of vines stretched out under the azure sky, rooted in nutrient-poor, well-draining, brick-red soils of clay and limestone. The sun beat down but the vines found refreshment in the gusts of the mistral. Its no wonder some of the worlds greatest ross come from this oasis in Provence.
The Chteau des Demoiselles team squeezes every drop of quality out of that advantageous terroir, taking painstaking measures to transform the estates supremely concentrated grapes into a ros of mouthwatering freshness. Harvest takes place at night to prevent coloring and oxidation. After the grapes have been gently pressed, the juice is cold-stabilized, allowed to settle for eight days, then aged on the lees in stainless steel, preserving the freshness of the fruit, lovely aromatics, and energetic acidity.
What results is the epitome of Provence ros: a salmon-pink wine buzzing with energy, seasoned by the sea spray, and cleansed by Provenal breezes. Make sure youre stocked up, or you could end up writing the familiar lament: Wish Id bought more.
