Burgundy Rated Alongside the Grand Crus
2019 Chateau de Pommard Clos Marey-Monge, Cote de Beaune
At Red Burgundys 97-point level, there are almost never any surprises:
Theyre all Grand Crus. Theyre all big names, theyre all $300+, and theyre already spoken for.
Not today. Chteau de Pommards celebrated monopole, the 2019 Clos Marey-Monge, scored 97 points in Wine Enthusiast alongside nothing but Grand Cruswines like Louis Latours 2019 Le Chambertin ($580) and Roche de Bellenes 2019 Charmes-Chambertin ($371).
Enthusiast went even further, naming the wine an Editors Choice, calling it a powerful but vibrantly cut expression of Pommard. James Suckling called it a sophisticated Pommard that goes well beyond village level. Trading for $200 and up in most of the country, weve got it today for $150the best price in the nation, by $40.

Pommards Uncrowned Royals
Ask any wine pro: Pommard has several vineyards that could rightly be upgraded from village to Premier Cru, and from Premier Cru to Grand Cru. Clos Marey-Monge, owned exclusively by the Chteau de Pommard, is a poster child, and the market has already spoken: Though its technically a village wine, this monopole is held in such high regard that its priced like a Premier Cru or Grand Cru. But given the company it keeps, its a steal.
Chteau de Pommard is a bit of a misnomer: it comprises two Chateaux, Chteau Micault and Chteau Marey-Monge, both within the Clos Marey-Monges walls. In 2016, the winery started conversion to biodynamic farming, achieving organic certification in 2019 and Demeter Biodynamic certification in 2021. Only horses are used in tilling these 20 hectaresnot a tractor in site.
2019 was one of those double-edged-sword vintages that have become a recurring challenge in Burgundy these days: historic in quality, but tiny in quantity.
The warm, dry, truly great year had one vigneron comparing it to the likes of the legendary 1865. Another, Philippe Pacalet, reached for the great string of vintages from 1945 to 1949 as a comparison. Despite the seasons abundance of sunshine, the wines are fresh and brisk with impressive concentration, a sublime feat that left Stuart Piggott, writing for James Suckling, declaring that the vintage has hit the bullseye, with its rare combination of excellence and great consistency.
Bottom line: for Burgundy collectors, this wine ticks all the boxes: Grand-Cru level quality. A vintage for the ages. The exclusivity and collectibility of a monopole. Symphonic black cherry and truffly blackberry perfumes. And at the best price in the US by $40? We know well be laying in a few bottles for ourselves before this vanishes.
Wine Access Tasting Note
An attractive deep purple hue. The aromas are led by Morello cherry, juicy blackberry, and damp forest floor, wrapped in layers of red rose petals and truffles. The palate shows stamina and elegance, with spicy dark fruit and a long-lasting finish. Power and elegance, depth and precision, with an undeniable Pommard stamp. Drink now2035.
