Perfectly Mature, Immeasurably Rare!
Todays delicious, perfectly aged, bodega-direct Rioja Gran Reserva from 1975 is simply as rare as it gets. Unless you have an uncle who has been collecting Spanish wine since the 1980s, theres no other way to access a rare time capsule like this that is still drinking beautifullylet alone at a price under $100!
We first offered the 75 Bodegas Corral back in April, and it sold out instantly. The lucky Wine Access members who snapped up our first tranche rated this wine a superb 4.4 stars, so on a recent trip to Spain, we called on our Master of Wine, Vanessa Conlin, to see if she could secure a second allocationand she refused to leave the bodega until she got it! If you love flawlessly cellared vintages of great European wines, skip straight to the buy button.

Founded in 1898 and still held by the family today, Bodegas Corral is a bastion of tradition in the Rioja town of Navarrete. Its located on the original pilgrims trail called the Ruta Jacobea (Way of St. James), the northern route to Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. The 1975 was the first Gran Reserva made at the Bodegas Corral facility, built in 1974, and thanks to its quality, it is a revered wine at the estatebut had never been shipped to the United States until this year!
According to Decanter, only about 9% of the entire production in 1975 went into the Gran Reserva wines, which only adds to these bottles rarity. According to the Rioja Consejo Regulador, 1975 was one of three Very Good harvests in Rioja in the 1970s, in addition to 1970 and 1978.
Made from vines that were 35 to 50 years old in 1975, clocking in at a modest 12.8% alcohol, this wine feels like a snapshot in time, giving off a burst of sour cherries, dusty earth, and dried herbs. Fully mature and utterly drinkable, this hasnt left the winery since it was made there in 1975.
When youre ready to drink it, our wine team recommends standing the bottle upright in a dark, cool place overnight before opening. Due to the age of the wine, use a Durand opener or combination of ah-so and corkscrew to ensure clean removal of the cork.
By the way, the importer of this wine was born in 1975, and he told us: I opened a bottle of the 1975 on my birthday a few months ago and it was the wine of the night. Thats no mean feat, considering that Grand Cru Class Bordeaux was its competition on the table that evening.
What a rare buying opportunity this is! Only a handful of cases are currently available to Wine Access members, and when theyre gone, theyre gone for good.

Wine Access Tasting Note
Dusty ruby-garnet core with shades of burnt orange at the rim. The aromas are led by sour cherry kissed by summer heat, with hints of dried orange rind, lilac-led potpourri, and saddle leather. There is a strong suggestion of cigar box, and beautiful dried herbs surround the periphery. This wine feels like a snapshot in time, giving off a burst of juicy red fruit, dusty earth, and dried herbs. Excellent acidity binds all the components, driving a lingering and expressive finish.
