One of Our Favorite Provence Finds
Its the stuff travel nightmares are made of.
When our flight touched down in Avignon, we reached for our trusty iPhone, only to discover it had gone straight from airplane mode to paperweight mode100% dead.
Thank goodness for that, because if not for this unexpectedly fortuitous technical difficulty we might never have veered off our itinerary and stumbled across the salmon-hued ros of our dreams: a marvelously crisp, thirst-quenching, bargain-priced Provenal stunner with enough zing to leave nearly every similarly priced bottle of its kind in the dust.
Complex but uncomplicated, light as a breeze and clean as a pearl, the 2022 Domaine Mas Ensoleille is your go-to summer companion for lawnmowing, poolside lounging, and porch-pounding. Its what real people drink in the real Provencenot the sugar-coated, lavender-laden fantasy peddled by Hollywood and tourist shops.
At an incredible $15, stock upbecause after one glass, nothing else will do.

Back to our iPhone odyssey: Imagine our shock when we learned that the closest Apple store was all the way in Aix-en-Provenceover an hour southeast by car. We reshuffled our appointments, tossed back an espresso, and started zooming down the A7 in our Fiat 500.
The Apple store employees were unfailingly politeand diplomatically vague on how long retooling the phone might take. So we headed across the street for lunch, and that was when our luck started to change.
The restaurant we wandered into happened to boast a MICHELIN star and a boisterously loud and teeming djeuner crowd. We managed to wedge ourselves into a spot at the bar and croak out the word ros, so the beleaguered bartender poured us the Domaine Mas Ensoleille, then disappeared.
Here was luscious, juicy deliverance from our panic-stricken morning in transit, with mouthwatering acidity balanced by a supple, silky texture. The wine was locally made, sourced from sun-drenched Grenache and Syrah vines surrounded by oaks and garrigue, and cleansed by a constant Provenal breeze.
Everything that followedthe delicious tartine campagnarde, the repair bill at Apple, the drive back to Avignonwas an afterthought. All we could focus on was the ros that had thrilled our palates. When we arrived home, a box from the broker with a sample bottle was waiting, along with six or seven other ross. Not only was the Domaine Mas Ensoleille our favorite, it was the most affordable of the bunch.
