Livio Sassettis Pertimali is an indispensable Brunello to me.Its grown on the hill of Montosoli, whicheven decades before individual crus entered the conversationwas one of the most revered sites in Montalcino. In the mid-1970s, Caparzo and Altesino bottled the first vineyard designates from this hill, which is also home to Sassettis vines.In 2018, spring frost cut Sassettis yields by 20%. And even though the weather was perfect for the last two weeks of the season, Livio and his son Lorenzo made the difficult decision NOT to make their $135 Riserva. As a result, the quality of this Brunello normale was catapulted into a rarefied classmaking it one of THE wines of the vintage. This kind of sacrifice is why the greatest producers transcend the vagaries of any growing season.Because I wanted to offer this icon to our members at the absolute best price possible, I negotiated a new price of $75 per bottle, down to $69 on six or more. Vinous said Sassettis wines are some of the sleekest and purest of Montalcino. They remain one of the pinnacle producers in this appellation. In 2018, he proved it: Vinous exclaimed Wow! in their review, calling it one of the top wines of the vintage.Over the years, Pertimalis complexity and intensity have enthralled Wine Access members to no end. One called it honestly the best Brunello I have ever had. Others hailed it as awesome and absolutely stunning.The wine has a mix of dark, ripe fruit, savory, and floral tones, and an immense palate that kept me transfixed to the glass. I had to lock in a few bottles for myself. You should do the same.
