Social Media for Those Who Hate Social Media
The Writer's Digest Tutorials program offers a wide range of writing and publishing education in a way that's easy to access on your schedule. With a bank of more than 400 videos and new ones added every month, the Tutorials program covers the big topics and some that are a little more specialized.
In this issue, agent Amy Collins helps writers make the mental shifts necessary to make the most of social media while still being able to write and find publishing success.
"My main focus of what I know about social media is how overwhelming it can be," says Amy Collins. "How much of a time drain it can be. And I also know how incredibly helpful it can be. And how it can lift your platform and your connection with your readers in a way that, before social media, we really didn't have available to us."
For Collins, a key part of making social media work for writers is to make subtle mindset shifts from what we think social media is about to what it actually is about. For instance, many writers think social media usage should be all about them and their careers.
"When it comes to attracting readers and connecting with readers, social media is not for us," explains Collins. "It's something we're doing for other people. We're trying to be of service. Social media mainly is a way where we can show that we want to be helpful and that we are attractive. We are not trying to promote ourselves on social media; we are trying to attract readers."
