Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergent

April is Earth Month, and one simple way to support the planet is by making small adjustments to the cleaning products you use regularly around the house. Check out this DIY, affordable, and earth-friendly laundry detergent recipe!

Supplies:

• 2 gallons + 1 quart of boiling water
• 1 bar of castile soap or natural laundry soap, grated
• 2 cups of Borax
• 2 cups of washing soda
• A 3-gallon container
• Empty jugs to store the detergent
• Funnel
• Mixing spoon
• Cheese grater
• 20 drops of a blend of essential oils. Recommended oils include:
  • Australian Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia (Cheel) ct. terpinen-4-ol
  • Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. cineole (L.)
  • Lavender Lavandula angustifolia(Mill.)
  • Geranium Pelargonium graveolens(L'Her.)

Instructions:

• Bring 1 gallon of water to a boil and pour into the bucket.
• Add the Borax and washing soda and stir until dissolved in the water.
• Bring 1 quart of water to a boil and add the grated soap.
• Stir (whisk) continuously until the soap is completely melted with no chunks.
• Pour the melted soap into the bucket with the already dissolved Borax/washing soda mixture. Stir very well.
• Add the last gallon of boiling water to the bucket and stir to mix.
• Let the detergent cool down (for about an hour).
• Add 20 drops of your desired essential oils to the mixture.
• Using the funnel, pour the detergent into your empty jugs.
• Use between 1/4 to 1/2 cup per load. (around 1/4 cup for high-efficiency washers)
