Coeliac disease (also spelled celiac disease) is an autoimmune disorder in which the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. When someone with coeliac disease consumes gluten, their immune system responds by attacking the small intestine, damaging the villithe small, finger-like protrusions that line the intestine and aid in nutrient absorption.

This damage can lead to various symptoms and complications, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, weight loss, fatigue, and nutrient deficiencies. Over time, untreated coeliac disease can cause serious health problems such as malnutrition, osteoporosis, infertility, and an increased risk of certain types of cancer.

The primary treatment for coeliac disease is strict adherence to a gluten-free diet. By avoiding gluten-containing foods, people with coeliac disease can alleviate symptoms, promote intestinal healing, and prevent complications. Additionally, they may need to take supplements to address any nutrient deficiencies caused by malabsorption.
