Hello summer! We're making the most of this warm weather by introducing more opportunities to visit Eastern State. This June and July, we're open every day from 10 am to 5 pm. Plus, we just launched a brand-new evening program called Summer Nights. Keep reading to learn more!
Summer Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary
Friday & Saturday Evenings | Now through July 27
New for 2024... join us for Summer Nights! Discover the rich and captivating history of sports, the arts, and other team activities at Eastern State and their enduring societal legacy in prisons today. Enjoy engaging talks, family-friendly activities, and interactive experiences.
Tickets are available online and at the door. Save $2 when you buy online! Discounted rates for groups of 15+. Eastern State members receive 20% off tickets purchased online in advance.

Summer Nights admission includes our audio tour via QR code, exhibits, artist installations, and more!
Reflect on your visit over some beer, soda, and food in The Fair Chance Beer Garden, presented in partnership with Triple Bottom Brewing and Philly Eats. Get a closer look at rarely-seen artifacts and try your hand at games like dominos and checkers in our Pop-Up Museum: Sports & Recreation. Complete a family-friendly sports-themed scavenger hunt and win a prize. View short animated films created by incarcerated people. Participate in educator-led Unlocking History experiences to learn more about the impact of baseball, boxing, journalism, and music at ESP and in prisons today.
Saturday evenings include even more! Join us on a Saturday to join in on these special themed nights:
Game Night(June 15)-Learn about the impact of games in prison & compete in a board game tournament.
Art as Inspiration (June 22) -Meet artists Mark Loughney (Pyrrhic Defeat) and William Cromar (GTMO).
Reentry Simulation (June 29)-Step into the shoes of a person being released from incarceration. Advance reservations required.
Field Day (July 6) - Participate in contests like a wiffle ball home run derby and footraces.

Join us as we come together to commemorate Juneteenth, honoring the realized freedom and the struggle of the once enslaved Africans in America. Featuring a live performance of "Unshackled" by The Black Breath Collective, family-friendly storytelling by Thembi Palmer, and a panel discussion. All activities are included with admission.

ASL Tour: June 29, 11:00 am
Guide-Led Tour & Discussion
This 45-minutein-depth, guide-led tour explores Eastern State's complex history, its ongoing relevance to contemporary social issues, and sets the stage for conversation about justice and the role of prisons in society. An Eastern State educator leads the tourin partnershipwith an ASL (American Sign Language) interpreter from Hands UP Productions.
Thisprogram includes both ASL and voice interpretation. Visitors from the D/deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing communities are welcome.
Due to limited capacity, the best way to secure your spot is to purchase timed tickets online in advance.

Are you a teacher interested in developing classroom materials about justice, incarceration and its history? Apply for a chance to be part of an exclusive, four-day Summer Teacher Institute which runs from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm each day from Tuesday, August 6 to Friday, August 9, 2024. Participating teachers will receive a $600 stipend, Act 48 credit (if teaching in Pennsylvania), and a virtual or in-person field trip to Eastern State Penitentiary for their class during the 2024-25 school year.
