2024a year of intention
Issue 264
Looking forward
Here we are then. The last day of 2023. Long year, right?
Around this time, I always think about my word of the year. And then I plan an intention. Its not necessarily a simple task, so I give myself the time and space to reflect. Thats when it really manifests. As Ive become more intentional, year by year, I take this exercise more seriously.
These are intentions. Thats important. They arent resolutions, and I wouldnt even call them goals or aims. And to be honest, sometimes they seem pretty small. Less run a marathon, more walk for 20 minutes a day before work. Or go one step furthermovement. For me, its about creating a new habit. A 20-minute walk wont do me for the day, but it gets me up. It gets me fresh air. It clears my head. And it means Ill walk more later in the day.
I really believe in the power of small, consistent habits. Nothing else compares. Einstein called compound interest the most powerful force in the universe, and the same applies to personal improvements. Improving by 100% in one step is a huge effort. But improve just 1% a day? Youll be 37 times better after a year. Every time I hear that stat, it blows my mind.
So this week, no requests to follow us, and no other blog articles to share. Take the time you would have spent reading them, and think about what intentions you could plan.
What 1% improvement could you make?
On a personal note
Ill reveal my word for 2024 next week, but the reason I like this process so much is it requires more thought and has longer lasting impact than a resolution thats broken in two weeks.
Change takes time, so the value of the word is usually centred for me around either a weakness or an area I wish to improve. Past wordsforgiveness, patience, mindset, health, finance, confidence.
Its easy looking at those words to see how a focus for a whole year on what those words mean to me, could have a real impact.
So how to pick your word for the year?
Firstly, take your time. Intentions for your year ahead matter, rushing it does not. Ask yourself this:
1 Whats something I know is holding me back?
2 Whats an area I am (privately) ashamed to know so little about that would improve my life to get better at?
3 Youre on your death bed reflecting back on your life. What mattered most in this reflection? Whats the one thing that will bring you closer to this vision of a life well lived?
Hopefully theres a nugget of wisdom in there. And Id love to hear what your word of the year is! Follow me on Linkedin and tell me what that word is on my latest post. We can all draw inspiration from each others intentions.
However you plan to spend this year, remember this:
In business its called planning.
In science its called neuroplasticity.
In spirituality its called manifestation.
Whatever field youre inits your life.
Take control, set intentions, and observe how much closer you get to better outcomes. An intentional life is the only real way to reach your heights.
Happy new year
