Pork & Beef available from Lazuli Farms!
Howdy !
And just like that, the Christmas break is over.
We thoroughly enjoyed our lack of schedule and lack of commitments over the holidays.
We watched lots of movies. Read a few books. Played some games. Skated at the outdoor rink. Stayed in our pyjamas until noon.
It was pure joy.
But reality is back!
The kids headed back to school this week. I'm back at work too. Hockey and 4H gear up this weekend for the kiddos.
January feels like the time to get organized with our lives. I'm gearing up for a few events and markets later in January (find out more here). We tidied up a few spaces in the house and in the soap-making studio. I digitally decluttered too. I stepped back from social media, deleted a whole bunch of apps from my phone, unsubscribed to a lot of podcasts, and even unsubscribed to a few email newsletters.
So, I have to give a big thank you for sticking with us. We are thankful for each and every one of you who keeps in touch with our farm & family through this email newsletter.
This week in the newsletter, we're going to talk about lard and share THREE amazing ways to use lard. We also share two loves and 1 tip as well.
So hold on and enjoy the ride today!
3 Ideas
3 amazing uses for lard
1: Frying (just about everything!)
Lard is our go-to fat for frying just about anything in our kitchen.
Use it for frying onions, celery, and carrots for the base of soup.
Use it for frying eggs or making omelettes.
Lard is perfect for searing your steaks, pork chops, or roasts before they head into the oven.
Spoon a few dollops of lard over your veggies, potato wedges, or sheet pan meals before putting them into the oven to roast.
Lard gives great flavour to your food AND provides such a great crispness to anything you fry.
2: Making Bread
Using lard instead of oil or butter in your homemade bread is the cat's meow!
Seriously though, lard makes your homemade bread so soft on the inside while giving your bread a nicely browned exterior.
It's simply the best.
Find your favorite homemade bread recipe here on the Lazuli Farms blog.
3: Making homemade soap
You can use any fat or oil to make soap.
But lard makes your soap AMAZING! When lard turns into soap during saponification in cold-process soap making, the resulting soap is super gentle on your skin. The soap is also nice and hard so that it doesn't melt in your soap dish.
We incorporate lard into all of the soaps we make here on the farm.
You can find them in the online store here.
Here's a little sneak peek of what's in store for 2024 = we're going to be releasing new soaps every month starting in March! You'll find fun & unique limited edition soaps coming your way soon! Watch your inbox for more details in the coming weeks!
But would you like to learn how to make homemade soap with lard? Shoot me an email back and we can chat! I'd love to hear if you'd like a recipe, a video tutorial, or an in-person workshop to help you out!

Grocery Shopping from the Freezer & Pantry
The best thing about having a farm is having our freezer filled with a variety of meat.
It makes meal planning so much easier since we can open the freezer and decide what to make based on the meats we already have.
And you can have that too!
You can fill your freezer this February with a half pork (around 60 lbs), a whole pork (about 120 lbs), or a quarter beed (about 100 lbs) from our farm.
It's your last chance to stock up with quality pork & beef until next fall. So check it out today!

No More Smelly Armpits
I had an epiphany a few months back.
The charcoal tea tree soap that we formulated has a combination of ingredients that are antibacterial and help with blemish-prone skin. {charcoal + tea tree oil + pepperming + lavender all have anti-septic properties!}
Smelly armpits are due to the bacteria on our skin NOT actually from the sweat.
So, what if I tried using the charcoal tea tree soap on my armpits?? Would that work like a deoderant?
Well, let me tell you the great news!
It does help!
I've been using the charcoal tea tree soap on my armpits in the shower every day for a few months and my armpits no longer smell after a hard day's work!
You may want to give it a try ;)
P.S. We've got tricks up our sleeve when it comes to armpits ... I'm currently working on creating a line of natural deodorants for you too! Coming soon!

EASY TIP FOR RENDERING LARD
When you buy pork in bulk from Lazuli Farms, you get a bag of pork fat included!
With that pork fat, you get to render it down into lard.
It's a pretty easy process - find instructions herealong with delicious recipes for using lard!
But I've got a tip for you that works like magic to help ensure that you get the most out of your pork fat.
The key to making lard easily is cutting the pork fat into small enough pieces so that the fat melts down into lard.
It can be a lot of work to chop up the fat into small enough pieces.
THE TIP: Once most of your pork fat has melted down, use an immersion blender to break down any chunks of fat that haven't melted!
This will allow you to get MORE lard from your pork fat!
Which means even more delicious food to make using your lard!
Make you own lard from the pork fat you get with your half or whole pork order from Lazuli Farms!
