strength vs. cardio...what to do?
Hi there!
Have you ever wondered if there is a right way to work out?
Is it hours of cardio? Lifting heavy weights? Pilates? Barre? Yoga?
There are lots of options and endless opinions, but as a Certified Personal Trainer, let me cut through the confusion and break it down so you know what actually works.
First, I have to say ANY movement is good movement. Exercise is essential for our overall health, but when it comes to weight loss, the science is pretty clear.
To lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume.
Youll typically burn more calories during a 30 minute cardio session than you would during a 30 minute strength training session, but the story doesn't stop there.
The more muscle mass you have on your body, the more calories you burn all day long and strength training is the BEST way to accomplish this.
Adding 30 minutes of strength training 3 days a week has been shown to increase over all lean muscle mass and decrease in body fat.
That said, aerobic activity (aka: cardio) supports heart and vascular health and is also important in your weekly routine.
So let's ask it again... what is the right way to workout?
It's pretty clear that the most effective training method will include a combination of both strength and cardio for weight loss, improved body composition and longevity.
And don't worry, if you are following my programs in the MOVE app - I've got you covered.
My 3:1 method from the app utilizes the most effective fat burning techniques with (3) days of strength training and (3) days of cardio training to give you serious results in about 30 minutes a day.
Here's the short of it, if you're trying to lose weight and short on time, you will get the most bang for your buck focusing on strength training. You'll build more muscle (not bulk), burn more fat and get faster results.
