Robin
Dear Conservancy Supporter,
American robins are the quintessential "early bird." If you're like me, you'll commonly see the rust-bellied robins hopping across grass in the morning, searching for worms.
The American robin is a such a familiar sight, it's the official state bird of three states Connecticut, Michigan, and Wisconsin. In fact, the robin was the top reported bird in our latest backyard birds survey, with more than 1,700 people reporting robins in their neck of the woods.
Although we usually see robins eating worms in the spring, do you know what else makes up their diet throughout the year?
Test Yourself: What do American robins eat more of in the fall and winter?
FLIES
SEEDS
BERRIES
Robins aren't the only visitor to backyards this year. Each spring, billions of birds return to the United States, which is why we love hearing from our supporters about which ones they're seeing. More than 30,000 supporters have shared their observations in our backyard birding survey so far.
From the familiar American robin to the noble peregrine falcon, every species needs protection. The sad truth is that we've lost a staggering 3 billion birds since 1970 and we must act now before even one more bird disappears.
That's why The Nature Conservancy is on the ground in your community and across the globe preserving vital habitat for birds and other vulnerable species. As a loyal member, your generosity helps us protect the lands and waters on which all life depends.
So, the next time you see a robin searching for worms in the morning light or hear their melodious calls, I hope you smile and remember you're playing an essential role in protecting the wonders of our natural world.
Thank you,
