2021 La Pelle Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard Block I Santa Maria Valley

100pt Winemaker shines with an own-rooted, 48-year old plot

Bien Nacido is one of the most famous vineyards in the New World. Located in the Santa Maria Valley on Californias Central Coast, its been named one of the Top 25 Vineyards in the World by Wine & Spirits, and one of Californias Grand Cru Chardonnay Vineyards by Wine Enthusiast.

Block I is a completely unique portion of this sacred vineyard, encompassing less than 2% of its Chardonnay. The parcel was planted back in 1973 on its own roots, which means that its vines were 48 years old in 2021. In 100-point winemaker Maayan Koschitzkys hands, the fruit from these vines is rendered into something otherworldly.

Saint-Aubin is the source for some of the finest value in Burgundy, and that might be doubly true from the reds from the village. Jrme Fornerot is a rising star in the region, featured on wine lists like Eleven Madison Park and Caf Boulud, and his bottling from the Les Perrires Premier Cru thrilled us when we tasted it not long ago. He gets to work with old vines planted in the 1960s and 70s, and in the throwback 2021 vintage, he created a complex bottle that highlights the seductive, red-fruited side of Burgundy.
