Savvy Buyer Alert: Latour’s $25 White Burgundy Exclusive

Legendary investor Joel Greenblatt made his name by identifying spinoff companies as a unique source of value on Wall Street, but he realized it would take time for the market to properly value the new ventures.

The same thing happens with wine: Just look at the Bourgogne Cte dOr AOC, created only in 2017.

Bourgogne Blanc can be made from an enormously wide swath of land: Chardonnay grown anywhere from Chablis to Beaujolais can carry the designation. But the new Bourgogne Cte dOr appellation is restricted to a set of the most prestigious villages in the absolute heart of Burgundys most famous swath of land: the Cte dOr.

Its a clear step up in terroir. But because the AOC is brand new, pricing hasnt caught up. Were therefore able to offer Louis Latours 2018 Bourgogne Cte dOr Blanc for $25about the same as nondescript Bourgogne Blanc bottlings from other producers.

Thats only possible because 2018 was the appellations second year. It also happened to be a very warm, ripe vintage with nevertheless grippy, focused whites.

The Latours have owned land in the Cte dOr for more than three centuries, and theyve been family-run the entire time. Its a legacy few in Burgundy can match. Theyre also the only estate in Burgundy with their own cooperage, allowing them to customize barrels for each site and each winean exceptionally rare practice employed by some of the worlds best producersand its a testament to Latours attention to detail and spare-no-expense attitude.

This wine spent over eight months in stainless-steel tanks from fermentation until bottling. The nose combines the bite of green apple skins with dried lemon zest with hints of rich cream, touches of delicate nuttiness, and a layered palate full of pear, limestone, and sea salt. Its exemplary Burgundy for the price, perfect to pour with a grilled-shrimp Caesar, creamy baked chicken scented with citrus and nutmeg, or even some takeout falafel. Make sure you stock up.

Pale golden hue. Remarkably fresh on the nose, with Meyer lemons, cut green apple, white flowers, and chamomile. The vibrant fruit is supported by warmed vanilla, baked almonds, and crushed stones, both on the nose and palate. The wine is showing dimension and complexity, as secondary flavors of button mushrooms and toast come to life. A perfect pairing for poulet rti, hearty roasted root vegetables, or steamed halibut.
