Dear Friends! Have you ever sat in complete solitude and silence for at least 10 minutes? Complete and utter silence without outside stimuli from your phone, music, or books.
And suddenly hearing opens up. Not the usual hearing of external stimuli you suddenly start hearing yourself, you hear what moves within you.
Today I invite you to drop all formal meditation or mindfulness practices and instead simply sit in complete silence. Sometimes detailed instructions are over-complicating a simple practice. Sit. In. Silence.
One of my clients never stopped going. She was a mother, a teacher, a scientist, a coach, a sister, and so much more. She hardly had any downtime, so when I asked her if she ever sat in complete silence for 10 minutes, she looked at me like I had two heads. She began listing all the things she needed to get done in a day and everything else she could do with those 10 minutes.
I challenged her to take at least 10 minutes a day for herself to practice complete silence. She was annoyed by my request, but she never turned down a challenge.
In our session the following week I asked about her experience. She finally took some time for complete silence and solitude. She told me it was an interesting combination of annoying and pleasant. She went through waves of endless thoughts, and waves of peaceful calm, that felt like a nap. She felt energized by these 10 minutes of practice and more focused on tasks she has then let herself take those silence breaks more often. She began focusing her attention on other things and felt herself becoming a more attentive mother, scientist, and sister.
The first time you try this, it will likely be challenging. You'll begin to notice how loud your thoughts can be, but you'll also learn how they dissipate if you dont feed them with your attention. You'll be able to catch your thoughts better and let go of the ones that don't serve you.
Perhaps at first, 10 minutes might be difficult, so start with one minute and build off that daily. Silence is valuable, and it can teach you many things. Open yourself, and your heart, to the gifts of silence.
