NASA astronauts practice "moonwalking" in desert
Moonwalking in the Arizona desert?
No, it's not a recreation of Michael Jackson's iconic dance move.
Instead, it serves as a training exercise for NASA astronauts as they prepare for the upcoming Artemis Program missions to the lunar surface.
During this week-long expedition in the San Francisco Volcanic Field near Flagstaff, AZ, astronauts Kate Rubins and Andre Douglas will have the chance to simulate moonwalk scenarios while wearing replica spacesuits.
This unique landscape closely resembles the moon's surface, providing them with a realistic training environment.
During the training, the team will practice lunar operations from beginning to end and will receive assistance from NASA engineers and field experts both on-site and remotely.
They will be supported by a team of flight controllers and scientists at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.
During the week, there will be four simulated moonwalks and six advanced technology runs that will follow the same protocol for operations on Artemis 3 and beyond.

The technology showcased in the demonstrations may also be integrated into upcoming Artemis program missions, featuring a display and navigation data feed via augmented reality (AR) or lighting beacons to assist the crew in returning to the lander.
Following the conclusion of each simulated moonwalk, a debriefing session will be held where all teams will gather to analyze the outcomes and extract valuable insights from the exercise.
The knowledge gained from this field test will be utilized in the strategic planning of upcoming Artemis missions, encompassing advancements in technology and collaborations with commercial vendors.
This marks the fifth field test conducted by NASA Johnson's Joint Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility Test Team.
In the past, training sessions dating back to the Apollo program have been conducted in the Arizona desert, chosen for its resemblance to the moon's terrain, complete with volcanic features, craters, and challenging faults to navigate.
