On Shabbat
The Hebrew word Shabbat comes from the root Shin-Bet-Tav, meaning to cease, to end, or to rest (its where the name for our Shabbat candle holder comes from - The Rest). This ritual, whether religious or not, tracks the passing of a week and signals that the moment of sweet respite has arrived. In the winter months especially, we seize the chance to sit back, indulge in a big mealand a couple extra glasses of wine.
Abraham Heschel said "more than the Jewish People have kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jews."It is for many of us, less about the religious roots of Shabbat and more about the ritual.Every week, or every month, or even just on occasion, Jews across the world decide how to mold a centuries-old tradition to fit their contemporary lives. Like literal clockwork, there will always be another Shabbat: And the option to participate will always be ours.
Shabbat Shalom from us.
