We're back with our much loved happenings calendar. Spring always brings a sense of optimism and things to look forward to and this season there are lots of new Jewish and Jew-ish things to see, do, read, and taste.
In London, there are just a few weeks left to catch Fashion City" at the Museum of London Docklands. This first-of-its-kind exhibition explores how Londons Jewish designers shaped global styleand spotlights iconic figures including wedding dress designer Netty Spiegel and high-end fashion legend David Sassoon, who dressed the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Princess Diana.
In Houston, The Menil Collection hostsJanet Sobel: All-Over, an exhibition of the self-taught artists abstract paintings from the 1940s. While she never became a household name, Sobel created drip paintings years before Jackson Pollock came onto the scene. Its only in recent years that larger institutions have begun to recognize this Ukrainian-born Jewish womans contribution to the form.
Only a few weeks left to catch the Mark Rothko retrospective is on view at Fondation Louis Vuitton through April 2 in Paris. From his earliest figurative paintings to his lauded contemporary abstract works, the exhibition spans Rothkos entire career. (Its actually the first exhibition in France dedicated to the artist since 1999.)
The Whitney Museum in New York hosts an exhibit dedicated to Harold Cohens AARON, the earliest artificial intelligence program for artmaking. The son of Polish-Russian Jewish immigrants in London, Cohen left behind his established career as a painter to focus full time on AARON in the late 1960s. He actually named the program after Mosess brother, as an allusion to arts relationship with the divine.
At Howard Greenberg Gallery, also in New York, an exhibition of Joel Meyerowitzs photos runs from April 11-June 1. The award-winning photographer and two-time Guggenheim Fellow has said of his heritage: My sensitivities and sympathies, my cultural and moral stance, were informed through a kind of Jewish passport a way of looking at the world and seeing characteristics, qualities, sentiments and emotions touched by a Jewish sympathy.
As the number of Jews increased in Florida over the last 100 years, so did the discrimination against them. Through July 2024 at theJewish Museum of Florida-FIU, The Hate Around Us consolidates artifacts, photographs, and historical documents to take viewers through decades of antisemitism in Florida.
Comedy legendLarry David has two upcoming live shows this spring: March 29, in Washington, DC and April 1, in Boston. A Conversation with Larry David features the Curb Your Enthusiasm creator alongside a moderator, for an informal chat about his time on Seinfeld, Curb, and more.
Alex Edelmans hit comedy special joins streaming platform Max on April 6. Alex Edelman: Just for Us is based on his hugely successful live show, wherein he recounts the story of attending a White Nationalists meeting after being targeted with antisemitic threats online. It's a must see if you didn't catch the show in person.
NINA New York is Dumbos newest Mediterranean restaurant, led by Israeli chef Sage Azrouelnephew of fashion designer Yigal Azroul. The entire menu is kosher-style (but not kosher certified), and dishes like mushroom hummus are accompanied by vegan challah.
Neighborhood Winery, the new iteration of Los Angeles Arts District staple Pali Wine Co., is open now. Specializing in natural wines made from California Central Coast grapes, the new tasting room also features a Jewish Deli-inspired food pairing menuin honor of co-owner Nick Perrs great-grandfather, a kosher butcher (in Flatbush, Brooklyn) and winemaker.
The Jewish Holiday Table is a new cookbook by Naama Shefi and the Jewish Food Society with Devra Fest featuring a sprawling collection of recipes135 of themplus stories from Jewish families around the world and images by photographer Penny De Los Santos. You can catch the co-authors on their book tour through New York, Florida, Boston, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
Director of the Holocaust Research Institute at the University of London Dan Stones sprawling new history book The Holocaust: An Unfinished History is available now. Stone draws on decades of research to focus on moments that might have been overlooked in traditional Holocaust discourse, and seeks to expand how we think about genocidal ideologies.
Also available on bookstands now, actor and comedian Brett Gelmans debut: The Terrifying Realm of the Impossible. This absurdist short story collection follows five individuals at different life stages, searching for answers to lifes most existential questions.
Treasure, based on Lily Bretts tragic-comic novel Too Many Men, comes out on June 14. Starring Lena Dunham and Stephen Fry, the film follows a journalist (Dunham) and her Holocaust survivor father (Fry) on a trip to Poland as they trace their family history.
A new Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black, hits US theaters on May 17. While the movie focuses primarily on the iconic singers adolescence and early adulthood, as well as the creative origins of one of her greatest albums, were hoping her Jewish heritage and upbringing will be more than a blip in the story.
