Spring is in the air. The fresh energy of warmer days is permeating the city, and were ready to, once again, emerge from our cocoons and jam-pack our calendars with joy-filled exploration. First on the list? Youll find us catching the sun with a good book that brings back cherished childhood memories or dining al fresco with savory bites that transport us to Tel Aviv. Weve compiled a few of the Jew-ish happenings were definitely adding to our agendas. And as we toast to tonights Shabbat, were celebrating the season aheadfull of inspiration and activity.
Parade is on Broadway for a limited engagement at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. Starring Tony Award-winning actor Ben Platt, the musical dramatizes the real-life trial, imprisonment, and lynching of Leo Frank, a Jewish-American factory manager in Georgia. The harrowing story explores how sensationalization and nationwide anti-Semitism led to the death of an innocent man and the creation of the ADL.
Lehrhaus, a new restaurant and gathering space for the Jewish community recently opened in Somerville, MA. Founders Joshua Foer and Rabbi Charlie Schwartz created Lehrhaus to serve as a modern day beit midrash, or study hall, with a contemporary menu to boot. All tavern dishes are kosher as well as pescatarian (the no chopped liver is a blend of eggplant and mushrooms), while the central library will host readings and lectures.
Adeena Sussmans Shabbat: Recipes and Rituals from My Table to Yours is now available for pre-order. From colorful sides and salads, to centerpiece courses like fig and pomegranate brisket, Sussman delivers Jewish comfort food, while painting a tangible portrait of Shabbat celebrations across Israel.
Northwest Portland is now home to Zula, a Tel Aviv-inspired restaurant from two of the citys expats. Each dish captures Tel Avivs diversity by incorporating Moroccan, Greek, Lebanese, and Iranian influences. Were thinking Zulas gazoz (Israeli sodas) and tahini ice cream will be the perfect treats to welcome warmer weather.
Another warm weather treat? Sandra Foxs The Jews of Summer. Her new book instantly takes us back to the beloved sleepaway camp experiences of our childhood. A visiting assistant professor of Hebrew Judaic Studies at New York University, Fox explores how this American Jewish rite of passage came to be, and how it evolved, over the decades directly following the Holocaust.
The first US museum survey of multimedia artist Josh Kline is now on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art through August 13. Spanning over a decade of work, the exhibition also features new installations and video pieces that face the climate crisis head on, exploring the human cost of one of our generations most pressing issues.
Codex Sassoon: The Earliest Most Complete Hebrew Bible will be going up for auction at Sothebys on May 17. Currently on view at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, the artifact moves to Sothebys Los Angeles on April 30, then to New York on May 7. This text is the earliest surviving example of a single codex that contains all the books of the Hebrew Biblewith their punctuation, vowels, and accents.

"Tzedek Boxes: Justice Shall You Pursue" is on view at the Dr. Bernard Heller Museum in New Yorks Greenwich Village. Inspired by the idea of creating a new Jewish ritual to foster deeds of kindness in the continual pursuit of justice, the Tzedek Box Project invites participants to insert written reflections on the daily acts of tzedakah theyve performed inside a box to be opened once a year. The exhibit features original boxes crafted by 29 contemporary artists.
A Small Light debuts on Hulu on May 1. The limited series recounts the story of Miep Gies, who helped hide Anne Franks family in the annex for over two years before the familys eventual capture. The series offers a different perspective on the well-known story by following Gies, an employee of Otto Frank, and her valiant efforts to try to save Jewish lives at the risk of her own.
